Cisco EtherSwitch 1220 and 1420 Series deliver configuration-flexibility foreasy migration

SAN JOSE, Calif. - October 28, 1996 - Cisco Systems, Inc. todayannounced the Cisco EtherSwitch 1220 and EtherSwitch 1420 series of affordable, configuration-flexible workgroup Ethernet switches.

The EtherSwitch products are part of Cisco's NetBeyond extended networksystem, which increases LAN performance and seamlessly integrates LANswith remote sites and the Internet. These new products enable users totake advantage of high-speed backbones and reduce server bottlenecks, without requiring changes in user's current network cablinginfrastructure or 10BaseT desktop systems.

The EtherSwitch products are available in fixed and modularconfigurations with 100BaseT and FDDI uplinks and support for 24 switched 10BaseT ports. All switches incorporate Cisco IOS(TM)technologies to ensure interoperability across the extended network andcentralized management. Enhanced multimedia support through thestandards-based Cisco Group Multicast Protocol (CGMP) enables theswitches to forward routed IP multicast traffic selectively to targetedmultimedia end stations, improving data throughput and reducing overallnetwork traffic.

"These new EtherSwitch products are designed to meet the demands ofsmall- to medium-sized businesses that are price-sensitive, but requireflexible solutions that allow them to migrate and grow their networksto take advantage of high-speed technologies, without sacrificingprevious investments," said Bill Rossi, senior product line manager forCisco's Small Internetworks Business Unit.

Configuration Options and Features

The EtherSwitch series consists of four individual switches and a lineof high-speed plug-in modules. The EtherSwitch 1220, afixed-configuration switch, is available in two models. Each offers 24switched 10BaseT ports and is available with two 100BaseTX ports or acombination of one 100BaseTX and one 100BaseFX port. The modularEtherSwitch 1420 is also available in two models, of 2K or 8K MACaddresses, with 24 switched Ethernet ports and two high-speed expansionslots. The expansion slots support 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX single-portand multiport repeater modules or FDDI modules.

The EtherSwitch series' support of 1K-8K MAC addresses allows users toconnect directly to desktops or 10BaseT hubs for LAN segmentation, providing added flexibility and investment protection. All modelssupport four RMON groups for enhanced manageability, network monitoringand traffic analysis. Additionally, the products include a SwitchProbe Analyzer (SPAN) port, allowing users to connect a networkanalyzer or an external RMON probe for support of all nine RMON groups.Port-configurable intraswitch virtual LANs (vLANs) provide broadcasttraffic control, firewall protection and simplified moves, adds andchanges.
