Vendors collaborate to enable video, Security, analysis and managementsolutions over Cisco ATM networks
SAN JOSE, Calif. - October 21, 1996 - Cisco Systems, Inc. todayannounced a program where it will work closely with 11 leading vendorsto provide customers with complete Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)solutions.
Cisco's ATM Associates Program is a joint interoperability, marketingand reference selling program. It is designed to make it easier andless expensive for customers to use ATM technology to upgrade theirnetworks and integrate voice, video and data into a single,multiservice infrastructure.
"Today, Cisco offers a comprehensive set of ATM networking solutions,which include its industry leading LAN and WAN ATM switches,ATM-capable LAN switches and ATM-capable routers," said Steve Pomeroy,ATM product manager at Cisco Systems. "Now, with our ATM AssociatesProgram, Cisco and the participating vendors are giving customersaccess to a host of complementary products, which enable them to deploycomplete video, security, analysis and management solutions over CiscoATM networks."
These products include ATM video compression/decompression systems(CODECS) and multiplexers, ATM network adapter cards for servers andhigh-performance workstations, ATM network monitoring and analysistools, and ATM security and encryption systems.
Through Cisco's ATM Associates Program, for example, customers canselect from four different vendors' state-of-the-art video CODECS. Usedin combination with Cisco's LightStream 1010 (R) ATM switches, thesesystems will give customers a complete, highly integrated solution fortransporting interactive or broadband video over ATM backbones.
Cisco and its ATM Associates will jointly market these products as partof a total, systems solution. Members will work to ensure that allproducts adhere to the latest ATM Forum standards and have been testedfor interoperability. This allows customers to reduce implementationcosts and deploy complete solutions quickly and easily.
Following is a look at the solutions provided by Cisco's ATMAssociates:
ATM Video CODECS and Multiplexers
Many enterprise customers want to deploy interactive video applications ( such as distance learning,telemedicine, on-line film editing and remote arraignment ( toeliminate transportation expenses and travel time. Cisco and its ATMAssociates offer tightly integrated video-over-ATM solutions that willhelp organizations boost productivity and revenues. Participatingvendors are AG Communication Systems, K-Net Limited, Litton-FiberComand NUKO Information Systems, Inc. (See accompanying list of productsprovided by each vendor.)ATM Network Interface Cards
As network administrators consolidate thenumber of servers they deploy in local area networks and move thoseservers from the department to the data center, they need high-speedconnectivity to network backbones. They also are looking for ways toefficiently transport bandwidth intensive Multimedia applications amongpower users on campus networks.To address these specific requirements, Cisco's ATM Associates offerATM NICs with a wide range of bus types and media interfaces.Associates include Adaptec Inc., Efficient Networks Inc., InterphaseCorporation and Olicom.
ATM Network Monitoring and Analysis Tools
Cisco Systems is workingwith the leading ATM monitoring and analysis system vendors to helpadministrators fine tune their ATM networks and greatly increasenetwork availability for users.Using solutions provided through Cisco's ATM Associates Program,administrators can quickly and cost effectively determine how their ATMbandwidth is being used and by which users. They can find whichapplications are generating backbone traffic and use that informationto enhance network configuration and optimize performance. Thesesolutions also allow users to troubleshoot applications running overATM. Participating vendors are Radcom Limited and Net2Net Corporation.
ATM Security and Encryption Systems
Cisco and its ATM Associates canprovide a comprehensive suite of ATM security solutions for bothcontrolled access and encrypted communications.Products from Cisco's ATM Associates enable the secure transmission ofvideo, voice and data over local, metropolitan or wide-area ATMnetworks and preserve confidentiality by preventing the unauthorizedmonitoring or changing of data.
