New agreement includes Microcom modems in future Cisco products


SAN JOSE, Calif. - July 29, 1996 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced thesigning of a new strategic agreement with Microcom, Inc. that extendsthe technology alliance between the two companies. Under the agreement,Microcom will integrate modem technology into a group of future Ciscoremote access products. In addition, Microcom will continue to supply itsmanaged modems for the CiscoAS5200 Universal Access Server.

Microcom supplies Cisco with its customized 12-port V.34 (28,800 bps)modems for use in the Cisco AS5200. Microcom modems deliver central sitenetwork management capabilities and enable configuration and management ofany modem deployed in the Cisco AS5200.

"Microcom has proven instrumental in the early success of the Cisco AS5200and will continue to develop advanced modem technology for future Ciscodepartmental access servers," said Kevin Kennedy, vice president of theaccess business unit at Cisco. "For higher density applications requiringdigital technology, on July 22, 1996, Cisco announced its intention topurchase advanced Modem ISDN Channel Aggregation (MICA) technology fromTelebit Corp. to integrate into its future high-density access servers."

The Cisco AS5200, announced in January 1996, is the first product in afamily of Universal Access Servers that integrate traditional analogtelecommunications technology and advanced Integrated Services DigitalNetwork (ISDN) technologies in a single chassis. The Cisco AS5200, nowshipping in volume, is being adopted rapidly by Internet service providers(ISPs), regional bell operating companies (RBOCs) and large corporationsthat need to provide both digital and analog access to users on anenterprise network.
