Xpoint to Incorporate Cisco Virtual LAN Solution in Xpoint Disk-to-LAN Software and PCI Server Adapter

SAN JOSE, Calif -- April 15, 1996 -- Cisco Systems and Xpoint Technologies,Inc. today announced that Xpoint has licensed Cisco's Virtual LAN (VLAN)technology, and will incorporate it in Xpoint's Disk-to-LAN software andPCI Fast Ethernet server adapter card.

VLAN technology allows network managers to group users and stationstogether into logical workgroups independent of the way they are groupedphysically. Using VLAN-enabled Cisco switches, routers and Xpoint'sDisk-to-LAN software and PCI server adapters, a customer will need only toinstall one Fast Ethernet adapter in a server to support multiple virtualLANs, or workgroups. This provides significant cost savings, VLANperformance enhancements, network scalability, and configurationflexibility for network planners and designers.

Xpoint, the leader in delivering intelligent I/O Disk-to-LAN software andPCI server adapters, plans to incorporate Cisco's interswitch link (ISL)Virtual LAN technology in its Xpoint Dual-10/100TX Disk-to-VLAN ServerAdapter card.

"VLANs add a new level of manageability to high-performance switchedinternetworks," said Jayshree Ullal, director of marketing, WorkgroupBusiness Unit, Cisco. "By working with Xpoint, Cisco will be able to makethese benefits widely available to high-performance servers."

"We are in the enterprise server acceleration business, and many of ourcustomers want to put their servers on the network backbone and manageVLANs from them," said Frank Wang, president, Xpoint Technologies, Inc."Cisco is an ideal partner for us because it's the leader in enterpriseinternetworking, and offers superior VLAN technology that is being deployedin customer sites today."

The Xpoint Disk-to-VLAN Server Adapter Card Solution

Xpoint is marketing a Disk-to-LAN accelerator solution, which streamlinesdata transfers and avoids log-jams caused by traditional file server I/Oprocessing. Xpoint's patent-pending BusBIOSTM software allows intelligentI/O adapters within a PC server to perform as an intelligent subsystem. For example, multiple LAN adapters communicating with each other andincorporating on-board processors can provide high bandwidth peer-to-peerand client-to-client operations across a standard system bus. Theserver's processor is freed to perform client server applications, and theoverall bandwidth provided by the enterprise server is fully scalable up toa Gigabit/sec level.

The Xpoint Dual-10/100TX Disk-to-VLAN Server Adapter offers thesehigh-performance I/O benefits, as well as the ability to access multipleVLANs from a single adapter card.

The Cisco Interswitch Link/VLAN Solution

Cisco developed the Interswitch Link technology and incorporated it intoits switches and router products lines in mid-1995 in order to enable itsenterprise customers to configure VLANs across internetworks. VLANsaddress the costly administrative expenses with client moves, adds andchanges by automating many of the configuration tasks, and placing themanagement control of these changes centrally.

Xpoint Technologies, based in Boca Raton, Florida, is the leading supplierof intelligent I/O Disk-to LAN software and server adapters designed forLAN-based gigabit servers and high-bandwidth multi-media applications.
