Cisco Systems to Join Multimedia Services Affiliate Forum

SAN JOSE, Calif. - March 5, 1996 - Cisco Systems Inc. today announced it isjoining the Multimedia Services Affiliate Forum, a global collaboration ofcompanies formed to support interoperable multimedia business communicationservices. The Forum is comprised of leading telecommunications serviceproviders; Cisco is joining Novell and Lotus as a Special Member technologyprovider.

Cisco will work with Forum members to develop internetworking technologythat will accelerate deployment of multimedia carrier services intended forbusiness applications. The focus will be on development of highly scalablesolutions with the quality-of-service guarantees required forbusiness-class public networking. Key networked multimedia technologiesinclude bandwidth reservation, multicast support, flexible queuingmechanisms and scalable virtual private networks (VPNs).

"Two of the most exciting trends in networking today are the businessbenefits being achieved by multimedia applications running over networksand the range of new multimedia service offerings being deployed bycarriers," said Jon Shantz, vice president for service providers at Cisco."Our long experience in the Internet and enterprise networks uniquelyenables us to accelerate the development of the scalable technologies thesecarrier services require."
