Cisco Systems Announces Support for T.120 Data Conferencing Standard

Standard Will Be Implemented in Japanese Multimedia Internetworking Project

SAN JOSE, Calif. - February 13, 1996 - Cisco Systems, Inc. and DataBeamCorp. today announced an agreement in which Cisco will license DataBeam'sdata conferencing standard and integrate it into the Cisco InternetworkOperating System (Cisco IOS(tm)) software.

DataBeam's technology, based on the T.120 standard established by theInternational Telecommunication Union (ITU), is a series of communicationand application protocols and services that provide support for real-time,multi-location sharing of information. Cisco is the first data networkingvendor to support the T.120 standard.

Separately, Cisco also announced a two-year cooperative effort withDataBeam, 11 Japanese companies and a Japanese University to developtechnologies for the use of multimedia applications over wide-areanetworks. The project will incorporate DataBeam's products and standards,including T.120 and RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol).

DataBeam's Collaborative Computing Toolkit Services (CCTS), a series ofsoftware development tools, provide the foundation for several applicationsthat support the exchange of data between multiple locations and networks.By integrating CCTS into Cisco IOS software, users will be able to takeadvantage of multi-point applications, including jointly editing documentsfrom remote locations and accessing real-time news feeds. The need forreal-time collaborative computing capabilities is especially important asusers become more dispersed, working from home, a hotel or customer site.

The T.120 standard for multi-point communications provides a facility forestablishing, servicing and managing the simultaneous delivery of databetween multiple users connected via LAN, WAN or dial-up networks. Morethan 50 telecommunications and computer-industry firms have announced theirsupport for the T.120 standard, including AT&T, British Telecom, Microsoft,PictureTel and Polycom.

DataBeam develops and markets document-conferencing applications for endusers and licenses collaborative-computing toolkits to third-partydevelopers. DataBeam application products, including FarSitedocument-conferencing software, are used by hundreds of organizations,including BASF, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, NASA and PhilipsSemiconductor, to help geographically dispersed users collaborate on sharedtasks in real time. The company, based in Lexington, Kentucky, was foundedin 1983 and is privately held.
