BLUE BELL, Penn. -- November 7, 1995 -- Unisys Corporation and CiscoSystems, Inc., today announced that Cisco's Internetwork OperatingSystem(Cisco IOS(tm)) software and routers support the Unisys A Series EnterpriseServer product line. This sophisticated suite of networking software givesUnisys A Series clients the ability to connect with and build openenterprise network solutions based on industry-standard networkingprotocols, while preserving current Unisys A Series premium networkingservices, including end-to-end prioritization.
Cisco IOS software ensures robust, reliable internetworks by supportingboth LAN and WAN protocols, optimizing WAN services and controllinginternetwork access. Unisys A Series Enterprise Servers are widely used inthe financial services and other industries that require high-volumetransaction processing, secure data networks and continuous quality ofservice (QoS) and network availability.
Unisys worked directly with Cisco in enhancing Cisco IOS software torecognize native prioritization of BNA data -- Unisys A Series networkingprotocol -- within Internet Protocol (IP) data packets. Prioritizationrecognition and encapsulation enables BNA information to be transmittedefficiently, reliably and cost-effectively over open networks usingTCP/IPnetworking protocols, the industry's predominant networking standard.End-to-end prioritization facilitates sub-second performance for criticalapplications.
"Unisys A Series clients are getting the best of both worlds -- Unisyspremium networking services plus the excellent price-performance benefitsof Cisco's internetworking software technology," said Larry Vaughan, vicepresident, Unisys Network Enable. "Cisco's routers expand the number ofoptions available to Unisys A Series clients for building low-cost,multivendor networks and for operating over existing opennetworks, such as the Internet."
"Our goal is to provide Unisys users with native quality-of-servicetransmission of BNA traffic over TCP/IP networks," said Christine Hemrick, director of product marketing for Cisco IOS software. "This further extendsthe native protocol support for Cisco IOS software, which supports multiplearchitectures and has been integrated into many hub, switch andinternetworking products sold worldwide by Cisco partners like Unisys."
To assist clients, Unisys offers a comprehensive range of services andpremium networking and desktop products for the implementation of opennetwork solutions employing Cisco IOS capabilities. Through Network Enable, which specializes in multivendor network integration, Unisys offersplanning, design, procurement, configuration, staging, installation, maintenance and other services for building and supporting custom opennetwork solutions that meet client business and technology requirements.Unisys is currently Cisco's second-largest reseller in the U.S.
The availability of Cisco IOS software meets growing client requirementsfor building scalable and secure multivendor network infrastructures basedon industry-standard network protocols. These networks can deliver costadvantages and can present more flexibility in connecting to other privateand public networks.
