BILLERICA, Mass., May 30, 1995 -- Teleport Communications Group (TCG) hasselected Cisco Systems' LightStream(tm) 2020 enterprise ATM switch as theexclusive enterprise switch for TCG's new ATM switched data services, thetwo companies have announced.

The LightStream 2020 will be used as both the central office switch and thecustomer premises edge switch in major metropolitan areas. Central officeunits will be provided by Tellabs, a reseller of the Cisco ATM switch, andedge units directly by Cisco.

TCG's new generation of enhanced ATM switched data services, announced inMarch, lets users interconnect geographically dispersed local-area networksand other high-speed applications at faster rates to increase performanceand reduce long-term costs. TCG, represented in 37 major U.S. markets, isthe only local exchange carrier to provide customized ATM connections tobusinesses and major long-distance carriers on a nationwide basis. TCGexpects to begin deploying the LightStream 2020 switches by July 1995.

"The LightStream 2020 is the most advanced enterprise ATM switch in theindustry," said Roy Rosner, vice president of TCG's Data Services BusinessUnit. "It is the only switch that provides the high bandwidth andperformance required by a central office switch, and the flexibilityrequired by an edge switch. Using the 2020 in both locations produces theadded benefit of common traffic and network management throughout TCG'sswitched data services, greatly improving bandwidth utilization, guaranteeing quality ofservice and reducing operating costs. In addition, the 2020's fault tolerance and its ability to mix FDDI and Ethernetswitching with ATM are critical to TCG and to our customers."

"We're very pleased that TCG chose Cisco to participate in providing itsnew ATM switched data services," said Paul D. Lazay, vice presidentand general manager of Cisco's Enterprise ATM Business Unit. "Cisco'sLightStream ATM switches are the building blocks of the emerging switchedinternetworking services that will take us well into the nextcentury."

The Cisco LightStream 2020 enterprise ATM backbone switch provides LAN andWAN internetworking for campus and global environments. SupportingEthernet, FDDI, ATM and frame relay, it is ideal for business-criticalapplications requiring data, voice and video. With the industry's mostadvanced traffic shaping and buffer management, the LightStream 2020provides complete control over bandwidth allocation, quality of service(QoS) and congestion avoidance for today's networks. With advancedfeatures and its ability to interoperate with existing networks, theLightStream 2020 provides a growth path as networks scale in size andcomplexity. The QoS functions enable users to guarantee bandwidth andassign high transfer priorities to mission-critical or time-sensitivetraffic flows.
