LAS VEGAS -- March 27, 1995 -- Cabletron Systems (NYSE: CS) todayunveiled new products resulting from the integration of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) into Cabletron'scompleteline of intelligent switching hubs. The new internetworking productssignificantly strengthen Cabletron's long-standing, five-year relationshipwith worldwide router market leader Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO).
Resulting from a pre-existing Cisco IOS technology licensing agreement,the Cabletron designed and manufactured products address the low-end,mid-range and high-end router market segments. The new products leveragetechnology partnering through Cisco IOS and Cabletron's Synthesistframework to deliver scalable, best-of-class routing solutions andintegrated hub/router network management.
Cabletron's low-end offerings, the CR-BRIM and CRM2 Media InterfaceModule, provide remote office Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity for theMicroMMAC[r] and MMAC-FNB[r] Token Ring and Ethernet intelligent hubs. Theproducts are based on Cisco's 2500Series routing technology. To address regional, mid-range applications, Cabletron's CRM3integrates Cisco 4000 Series modular routing technology in the MMAC-FNBproviding Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ISDN and WAN internetworking toCabletron's installed base of over 80,000 MMAC chassis. For high-end,centralized routing, Cabletron is delivering the 9W111-08 WAN RouterModule, the first in a series of solutions for the MMAC-Plusr based onCisco's 4500 Series technology.

As part of Cabletron's Synthesis framework to migrate customers toswitched virtual networks, Cabletron and Cisco have also announced theintent to cooperate in the development of interoperable, standards-basedvirtual network architectures. These architectures will leverage bothcompanies unparalleled internetworking expertise and collective experiencein developing distributed object-oriented network management.
Already resulting from the joint interoperability efforts isCabletron support of Cisco's LANExtension (LEX) technology, which enablesremote office bridges to communicate directly with centralized routers,reducing network configuration and addressing complexity.
