San Jose, Calif., Oct. 24, 1994 -- Cisco Systems today announcedimmediate availability of a new Copper Distributed Data Interface (CDDI)and Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) workgroup concentrator thatoffers up to 32 CDDI ports at $484 per port -- the lowest priced, highestdensity CDDI/FDDI concentrator in the industry.
The new C1400 CDDI/FDDI Workgroup Concentrator, which links servers andworkstations to CDDI and FDDI local-area networks, gives network managersconfiguration flexibility, ease of use and powerful management tools.
For CDDI connections, managers can choose models that offer from 16 to32 ports. A total of 448 CDDI ports can be stacked in a standard, 6-footrack, an industry best for currently available workgroup concentrators. Thenew concentrator also supports from four to 20 FDDI ports. Both single-modeand multi-mode FDDI are supported.
"While network managers have long recognized the benefits of CDDI/FDDIspeed, bandwidth and manageability, they are seeking more cost-effectiveways to implement this technology," said Jayshree Ullal, director ofCisco's Workgroup Business Unit. "The new workgroup concentrator has thesame powerful set of management tools as its predecessor, the C1100, including extensive Management Information Base support, advanceddiagnostic aids and password-protected access, but its high port densitymeans fewer hubs to manage. The new concentrator, together with Cisco'sFDDI adapters and routingsolutions, offers the industry's most comprehensive networking solution."
A new mixed-media line card developed specifically for the C1400contains both two FDDI and 12 CDDI ports, giving users the flexibility toconnect to the FDDI backbone while running CDDI links to the desktop.
In addition, the C1400 boasts new "hot swap" capabilities. Users canadd a series of ports (via a line card) to a concentrator without having totake the concentrator off-line or having it reset. This capability greatlyincreases the network manager's ability to monitor, modify or troubleshootthe network.
