MENLO PARK, Calif., June 21, 1993 -- Cisco Systems, which today extended its line of remote access routers, has simplifiedprocedures for installing routers at remote locations.AutoInstall, a Cisco software feature, is available on allcurrently shipping Cisco 2000, Cisco 3000 and Cisco 4000 routers.

AutoInstall enables organizations to extend internetworks toremote business operations cost-effectively and rapidly with plug-and-play installation. A user can have Cisco ship each remoteaccess router directly to the site of installation. The remoteuser then connects the router via point-to-point leased linesrunning HDLC to the existing corporate internetwork. Once theremote router is switched on, it automatically learns its networkaddress and downloads the software configuration that has beenprepared by a central administrator.

"Many customers are in the process of extending theirinternetworks to dozens, hundreds or thousands of remote businesslocations such as retail stores, bank branches, sales offices andschools. Cisco's AutoInstall feature significantly lowers thecost of installation while maintaining the benefits of fullrouting services and centralized administrative control," saidLarry Kung, Cisco product manager.

"There are other approaches on the market that achieve easeof installation by delivering a bridge, instead of a fullyfunctional router. Cisco's AutoInstall delivers plug and playremote access without compromising the powerful routing servicesthat users demand.

"Since the installation process no longer requires someonewith any knowledge of router software configuration, centraladministrators no longer have to travel to remote sites to getrouters up and running. Our customers save on travel costs andthey enjoy shorter installation schedules."

Cisco will continue to increase network applicationsavailability and to decrease the total cost of owning a networkwith future remote access capabilities. For example, Cisco willextend plug and play remote access by enhancing AutoInstall overwide area packet-switched services.
