MENLO PARK, Calif., April 12, 1993 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. and SynOptics Communications, Inc. today announced that the two companieshave adjusted their plans for the specific productimplementation of the RubSystem joint development effort. Asa result of customer demand for more fully integrated networkmanagement and the rapid rate of change in hub and routertechnologies, the two companies will now focus on integratingtheir high-end hub and router technologies at the networkmanagement level, rather than combining them into a singlehigh-end hardware chassis.
According to the companies, two specific changes in themarket have caused this refinement. First, customers areincreasingly placing a much higher emphasis on the logical, rather than physical, integration of their installed and newrouter and hub technologies in enterprise data networks.Cisco and SynOptics believe that the most effective means toaccomplish this is via network management rather thenphysical integration. Second, the pace of technologicalinnovation is increasing in both the hub and router markets. The companies believe that the best way to deliver thesetechnologies in a timely and efficient manner is to decouplethe hardware development while assuring that the products canbe managed as a cohesive system through tightly couplednetwork management capabilities.
The companies have already introduced several of theimportant elements of the RubSystem's network managementcapability through the SynOptics Optivity network managementsystem and CiscoWorks router management software and productsannounced last fall from Cisco and SynOptics, respectively. The companies expect that focusing on tightly integratingother network management capabilities, such as coordinatingtheir MIBs (management information base) for use on popularnetwork management platforms and defining a common networkmanagement database for their products, will be the mostefficient means of implementing the RubSystem solution.
