Participates in Multivendor Demonstration of Integrated IS-IS
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 28, 1992 -- Cisco Systems is teamingwith other leading networking vendors at Interop to demonstratetwo new capabilities for multiprotocol, multimedia networks: theIntegrated IS-IS routing protocol, and the DECnetPhase IV network protocol running over Token Ring media.
Cisco is joining Digital, Proteon and 3Com in the firstmultivendor demonstration of Integrated IS-IS, a new industrystandard that simultaneously supports the TCP/IP, OSI andDECnet Phase IV network protocols. An MS-DOS personal computer runningDigital's PathWorks communication software in Cisco's booth isaccessing a Windows application resident on a VMS system inDigital's booth. The computers are communicating with DECnetPhase IV packets through a recently introduced Cisco 4000 routerrunning Integrated IS-IS to a Digital router.
Paulina Knibbe, Cisco product marketing manager, saidIntegrated IS-IS "will let network administrators manage a singlerouting protocol to service multiple network protocols, reducingtraining and management complexity considerably."
Cisco also is demonstrating support for DECnet over TokenRing. This feature allows DECnet Phase IV devices on Token Ringto communicate with devices on other media via routing, source-route bridging and source-route transparent bridging.
This capability, implemented using Digital's specificationfor DECnet Phase IV packets on Token Ring, gives users "easierconnectivity between applications regardless of media," saidKnibbe, "allowing them to mix routing, transparent bridging andsource-route bridging applications between devices on Ethernetsand Token Rings."
Cisco also supports routing of TCP/IP, Novell IPX,XNS, OSI, AppleTalk, and Banyan VINES, and translational and source-routetransparent bridging on Token Ring media.
Cisco Systems, Inc., is the leading worldwide supplier ofhigh-performance, multimedia and multiprotocol internetworkingproducts, including routers, bridges, communication servers andnetwork management software. Cisco technology can be used tobuild enterprise-wide networks linking an unlimited number ofgeographically dispersed LANs, WANs, and IBM SNA internetworks. In the United States, Cisco is traded over-the-counter under theNASDAQ symbol CSCO.
