This is a typical installation in a city like Barcelona, where you have the sensor over there, and then you have a data processing station that collects the data and then sends the data to the data center through the Wifi. With Fog computing, we'll be able to virtualize this kind of hardware and the processing that is inside.

Barcelona is an ancient city. It is 20% of our Spanish GDP, so it’s important for the economy of our country. Barcelona has a very compelling smart city vision. Cisco and many other technology companies have been working with the city government in order to provide the best possible services for the citizens in a very efficient way. Barcelona started its strategic Internet of Things to improve the quality of life. We’ve done a Proof of Concept on how we can manage the different services using Cisco technology.

With fog computing, we can unify waste management, traffic management, smart lighting, in a single platform for the government so they can have real-time information to make decisions. Cisco has been working with the city to provide network and devices like the WiFi access point that provides connectivity for the different applications. Barcelona will have around 4,000 cabinets. They will provide electricity, power to traffic lights, to the public lights, and to the cabinets. With the Proof of Concept, we virtualize all services in a single box. The city has a very advanced vision in terms of smart cities. They realize the street cabinets that you can see all over the city offer a perfect infrastructure for their digitization plan. Cisco will work with several partners like Sensefields. Sensefields provides a solution to capture information about traffic flow, number of vehicles, speed, to plan for future traffic solutions. Our sensors are located in the pavement. They collect and aggregate information to the traffic management software. Now our sensors integrate into a Cisco Fog open platform. We are looking at a map of Barcelona with photo sensors that are connected through a Cisco network. You can see the temperature inside the garbage container. This one is a noise sensor, and is measuring, in real time. With this common platform, it will be much easier for the start-ups and companies to develop services over devices and create more jobs in the city.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Cisco wanted to address a real problem that most of the infrastructures in the city are organized as vertical silos. BSC is developing and orchestrating the full stack of software in thousands of cabinets in the city, enabling decisions at the local level, that can be addressed in a couple of seconds and information being shared across the different tenants. Everything that is hardware, we turned into software components and everything can be remotely managed from a single control center in the city. How we can bring a vision to reality, so from fog computing, vision, architecture, we have demonstrated a real example of what we did in Barcelona.
