Cisco doubles down on commitment to impact 1 billion people

Cisco and Global Citizen will join forces for the Global Citizen Festival in South Africa.

Some of the biggest names in music will headline a festival in South Africa in December, including Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Ed Sheeran and Usher. Advocacy organization Global Citizen announced this festival—the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100—as part of its campaign to end extreme poverty and honor activist Nelson Mandela. Mandela believed poverty was man-made and said, "It can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings."

During an appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins said, "This is a natural thing for Cisco to be a part of. It lines up with our culture, it lines up with our initiative to positively impact 1 billion people." Cisco has a history of making the world a better place with a strong Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. Using technology, cash grants, and expertise, Cisco hopes to meet the 1 billion goal by 2025.

"Corporate America and corporations around the world have to take a much more active role in helping solve some of the biggest problems," says Robbins.

As important as it is to have a global impact, Cisco is also committed to ending homelessness in Santa Clara County, Cisco's global headquarters. In March, the company announced a 5-year, $50 million pledge to Destination: Home, a non-profit working to provide permanent housing to the chronically homeless. So far, the organization has permanently housed more than five thousand people in Santa Clara county.

Creating positive social impact also means thinking of solutions to the global skills gap. Many around the world need the education to become part of a tech workforce, and Cisco's Networking Academy provides those opportunities. Today, more than 8 million students have trained with Networking Academy, building skills in everything from security, networking, to the Internet of Things. The numbers speak for themselves. Networking Academy has 10,400 institution partners, and 22,000 instructors in 180 countries.
