SAN JOSE, Calif. May 4, 2010 – Cisco announced today that several service provider customers around the globe, including Hong Kong Cable in Hong Kong and Canal Digital Denmark are taking advantage of new Cisco® Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) components to add upstream and downstream broadband capacity to their networks. The CMTS architecture allows for DOCSIS® 3.0 upstream channel bonding at speeds of 100 megabits per second or more and downstream channel bonding at speeds of 160 Mbps or more.

High-speed data service continues to be a growing aspect of global service providers' business, and it is a high priority for them to deliver faster Internet speeds to accommodate increased video traffic and other rich-media applications that consumers and businesses rely on for communication, news, information and entertainment.

The Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 solution enables service providers to use channel bonding to deliver triple-play services of high-speed data, voice and video and to dynamically allocate DOCSIS network bandwidth based on subscriber demand. New products include the Cisco uBR-MC20x20V DOCSIS 3.0 Broadband Processing Engine, a next-generation line card for the Cisco uBR10012 Universal Broadband Router, and the Cisco uBR-MC88V Broadband Processing Engine, a next-generation cable line card for the Cisco uBR7200 Series Universal Broadband Router.

Highlights/Key Facts:

  • The new Cisco uBR-MC20x20V DOCSIS 3.0 Broadband Processing Engine provides 20 upstream and 20 downstream channels per module. Other key features and benefits include:
    • A quadruple increase in the integrated downstream channel capacity of the Cisco uBR10012 CMTS and upstream channel bonding, providing massive scalability for service providers
    • Highest capacity in the industry: 160 downstream and 160 upstream per chassis, scaling all the way to 304downstream when used with the Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 Wideband Shared Port Adapter (SPA)
    • Supports additional features of the DOCSIS 3.0 specification including IPv6, multicast and Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (S-CDMA)
    • Operationally simple upgrade from the Cisco MC5x20H line card
    • Pay-as-you-grow flexibility with software licensing
  • The new Cisco uBR-MC88V DOCSIS 3.0 Broadband Processing Engine adds eight upstream and eight downstream channels to the Cisco uBR7200 Series router platform, including the Cisco uBR7225 and Cisco VXR routers. The new engine also:
    • Creates the most advanced and ideal platform for small to midsize CMTS networks
    • Significantly expands the capacity of the Cisco uBR7200 Series Universal Broadband Routers to address growing subscriber bandwidth demands and enable cost-effective scalability of services and subscribers.
    • Achieves better radio frequency performance with advanced spectrum management, ingress noise cancellation and S-CDMA
    • Offers an operationally simple upgrade from the Cisco MC28U line card

Supporting Quotes:

  • Olaf B. Poulsen, chief technology officer, Canal Digital Denmark:
  • "Cisco's enhanced DOCSIS 3.0 solution will enable us to continue to offer our customers even faster speeds and accelerate the deployment of advanced IP services. The new 8x8 DOCSIS 3.0 line cards considerably extend our capacity and enable us to effortlessly provide new voice and data services to our customers."

  • Simon Yu, senior vice president of network operations, Hong Kong Cable:
  • "Cisco's new 8x8 line cards will allow us to support downstream and upstream channel bonding at a DOCSIS 3.0 line rate so that we can offer increased high-speed data and voice services to our residential subscribers."

  • Surya Panditi, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Access and Transport Technology Group:
  • "Moving toward an all-IP network is critical for service providers to deliver services across managed and unmanaged networks using a single infrastructure. Cisco has been working closely with our customers to evolve their existing IP infrastructure to a medianet, an all-IP network that is optimized for rich media that can rapidly deliver enhanced interactive and personalized services without disrupting existing services. IP technologies like the new DOCSIS 3.0 line cards are tools in the toolkit that help get them closer to the medianet reality."
