HONG KONG, July 12, 2011 – Cisco is continuing its tradition of innovation by announcing a simpler way for service providers to architect the next-generation Internet to be more visual, mobile and virtual. Cisco today announced major advancements in the Cisco® ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers, which will set new industry benchmarks and dramatically increase capabilities at the edge of the next-generation Internet and transform the broadband communications and entertainment industries.
New capabilities, performance gains and significant cost savings stem from Cisco's latest innovation, nV (network virtualization) technology, which will be deployed first on the Cisco ASR 9000 system, then made available on other Cisco platforms in the future as networks continue to evolve.
Cisco predicts that the number of network-connected devices will be more than 15 billion, twice the world's population, by 2015. In the fifth annual Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast (2010 to 2015) released earlier, the company also said the total amount of global Internet traffic will quadruple by 2015 and reach 966 exabytes per year. The projected increase of Internet traffic between 2014 and 2015 alone is 200 exabytes, greater than the sum of all Internet Protocol traffic created around the world in 2010. And by 2015, the Asia Pacific region will generate the most IP traffic (24.1 exabytes per month), overtaking North America, last year's leader.
And according to the study, by 2015, there will be nearly 3 billion Internet users, more than 40 percent of the world's projected population; and 1 million video minutes, the equivalent of 674 days, will traverse the Internet every second. All these trends represent mounting demand for greater bandwidth, and Cisco's announcement today helps service providers thrive in this rapidly changing environment and capitalize on these trends.
The Cisco ASR 9000 system is positioned in the edge and aggregation sections of the network and complements the Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System (CRS) located in the core of the next-generation Internet. It will help enable compelling new experiences for consumers, new revenue opportunities for service providers and new ways to collaborate in the workplace.
Several of the world's leading service providers, such as PCCW, China Telecom, Comcast, Cox Communications, FastWeb, NTT Plala and Tata Communications, are deploying the Cisco ASR 9000, joining more than 500 service provider customers of the ASR 9000 Series.
