Elections have never been more social with more shared photos, tweets, likes, and unlikes than ever before. We checked in with a few social and digital leads at the National Political Conventions and captured their thoughts on the power of social media.
November 04 , 2012
It is a busy time, to say the least, for those leading social and digital efforts on the Presidential campaign trail. From Facebook to Twitter and the campaigns they are helping to fuel, we have insight into how social media is changing the way people stay informed and engaged during this election season.
ZAC MOFFATT: MY NAME IS ZAC MOFFATT. I'M THE DIGITAL DIRECTOR FOR THE MITT ROMNEY CAMPAIGN.
SOCIAL NOW HAS KIND OF A CORE COMPONENT INTO THE, KIND OF, A CAMPAIGN GETTING ITS MESSAGE OUT, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE TAKING STATE-SPECIFIC MESSAGES AND MAKING THEM NATIONAL.
OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, FOR EXAMPLE, IF WE PUT A MESSAGE OUT THERE THAT KIND OF GAINS TRACTION, YOU'RE REACHING THREE TO FOUR MILLION PEOPLE IN TWO DAYS, WHICH WE NEVER HAD THOSE OPPORTUNITIES BEFORE.`
KATIE HARBATH: IT'S VERY POWERFUL AND IT ALLOWS CAMPAIGNS AND IT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO REALLY GET AN UNFILTERED, VERY QUICK IDEA OF WHAT EVERYBODY THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT WAS SAID.
MY NAME IS KATIE. I WORK IN THE FACEBOOK WASHINGTON, D.C. OFFICE WORKING WITH REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES AND ELECTED OFFICIALS ON HOW THEY CAN BEST USE FACEBOOK TO TALK WITH VOTERS AND CONSTITUENTS.
WE LIVE IN A CULTURE WHERE EVERYBODY WANTS EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW AND THEY DON'T WANT TO BE PATIENT FOR WAITING FOR A VIDEO TO DOWNLOAD BECAUSE IF IT DOESN'T DOWNLOAD QUICKLY, THEY'RE JUST GOING TO MOVE ONTO THE NEXT THING.
ADAM SHARP: THE CONVENTIONS ARE, FROM THE START, A REAL-TIME EXPERIENCE.
PEOPLE IN THE HALL REACTING TO THE SPEAKER, PEOPLE AT HOME WATCHING ON TV REACTING TO WHAT THEY'RE SEEING IN THE HALL AND NOW BEING ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN REAL-TIME.
MY NAME IS ADAM SHARP. I'M HEAD OF GOVERNMENT NEWS AND SOCIAL INNOVATION AT TWITTER.
THERE WILL BE MORE TWEETS SENT JUST THIS WEEKEND THAN HAD EVER BEEN SENT PRIOR TO THE 2008 ELECTION AND SO THE EXPLOSION OF CONVERSATION OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS HAS TRANSFORMED THE POLITICAL PROCESS.
ZAC MOFFATT: I JUST THINK IT'S IMPORTAN THAT PEOPLE REALIZE THAT, YOU KNOW, IN 2012 IT'S NOT A DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN ISSUE.
MY HOPE IS THAT WHEN PEOPLE ARE LOOKING AT THIS, THEY'RE LOOKING ABOUT HOW CAN THEY HAVE A RICHER CONVERSATION AND A RICHER ENGAGEMENT WITH THE CONVENTION, NOT ABOUT WHAT PARTY IT IS THAT'S HAVING IT BECAUSE IT PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES THAT WEREN'T THERE FOUR YEARS AGO AND I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHERE IT'S HEADING IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS.
