Just one year after acquiring two highly respected providers of virtual private network (VPN) technology and rolling out a series of internally developed products, Cisco Systems, Inc. has captured worldwide leadership in the VPN market, according to new, independent studies. In its report titled "Quarterly Worldwide Market Share and Forecasts for the first quarter of 2001," Infonetics, Inc. said Cisco now leads the world-wide dedicated VPN hardware market. The report noted that Cisco's lead in this market was by virtue of its broad product range, "solid shipments" of its Cisco 7100 VPN routers for site-to-site deployments, and "strong interest" in the Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator series for remote access deployments. Infonetics also indicated that Cisco leads the worldwide firewall market with its VPN-enabled Cisco PIX Firewall family. The PIX firewall held 55 percent of the $473.1 million market for high-end firewalls in calendar 2000, according to Infonetics. In addition, a second report from Infonetics which tracked user perceptions of the VPN market found that most customers surveyed already view Cisco as the VPN market leader. "From the standpoint of end-user perception, Cisco is the player to beat (in the VPN market)," the report stated. Separately, Synergy Research also provided data this month that underscores Cisco's ascent in the VPN market. In Synergy's "Internet Equipment Worldwide Marketshares report," the research firm found that Cisco captured approximately 25 percent of the $361 million worldwide VPN gateway market in calendar 2000.
