Cisco is making several major announcements at Supercomm including enhancements to our leading IP+Optical portfolio, new DSL solutions, an intelligent programmable networking solution for rapid deployment of service provider networks, and new Cisco Career Certifications specficially for service provider network engineers. Cisco customers Bell South, Velocita, Voicenet and Lecstar also announcing new services based on Cisco equipment this week.

- Unified Control Plane demonstration. Cisco is taking part in the Optical Internetworking Forum's (OIF) User Network Interface (UNI) interoperability demonstration at Supercomm. Cisco is the first router vendor to demonstrate interoperability with the UNI specification, utilizing its sophisticated and standards-based Unified Control Plane (UCP) for seamless IP+Optical networking. Cisco's contributions to OIF's multi-vendor, multi-technology demonstration include the industry-leading ONS 15454 Metro Optical Transport platform, Cisco 12000 SERIES Internet Routers, and the Cisco Unified Control Plane (UCP). - 10Gbps on the ONS 15454. Cisco announced 10Gbps (10 Gbps) capabilities for its industry leading ONS 15454 Metro Optical Transport platform, further extending Cisco's metro optical leadership and accelerating service velocity for its customers. With high-speed OC-192, the ONS 15454 delivers supercharged scalability and flexibility to meet service providers' ever increasing bandwidth demands while slashing the cost of 10Gbps transport in the metro. - Cisco 7400 Internet Router. The Cisco 7400 is a high performance, compact (one rack-unit high) application specific router offering multiple combinations of rich Internet Protocol (IP) services to build customized networking applications. The latest solution in Cisco's Next Generation Internet Router family, the Cisco 7400 integrates scalable performance with industry-leading port density allowing both service providers and enterprises to extend these applications to a much wider range of network configurations and environments. Customers can now take advantage of high-performance network-layer switching and services including security, Quality of Service (QoS) and traffic management at more locations across the network. - High speed WAN aggregation capabilities on the Cisco 7600 Internet Router. Continuing to broaden the reach of the leading Cisco 7600 Internet Router, Cisco is introducing high-speed WAN aggregation services, delivering optical WAN and MAN networking with a focus on line-rate delivery of high-touch IP services at the edge of service provider networks. Delivering the industry's highest service-enabled DS3 and OC-3 density on a single platform and powered by Cisco's PXF adaptive networking processors, the new features are delivered through two high-speed channelized optical service modules (OSMs) available in OC-12 and OC-48 options. - Cisco 12406 Internet Router, channelized T1/E1 cards for Cisco 12000 Internet Routers and enhanced 12000 manager software. The Cisco 12406 Internet Router is the newest member of the industry-leading Cisco 12000 Series Internet Router. It offers with six times the performance of the closest competitor and carrier-class OC-192/STM-64 networking speeds in the smallest form factor available on the market today. It provides 6-slots, support for all Cisco 12000 series line cards, and 120 Gbps throughput for locations where a high capacity router is needed but only a limited amount of space and power are available. Also, Cisco is expanding its element management framework (CEMF) with a collection of new, enhanced, and integrated element managers the Cisco 7200/7400 Manager, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Manager and Cisco 76000 Internet Router Manager, and the Cisco 12000 Manager. These new managers enable service providers to plan, provision, configure, and monitor network services across Cisco Internet routing platforms, providing full fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) element management support from a single integrated console application. Network management news: Cisco Drives Intelligence into Service Provider Networks with Cisco Network Services Solution
To enable service providers to reduce operating costs and accelerate the delivery of new billable data services, Cisco is announcing an integrated and programmable XML-based network solution for hands-free deployment and configuration of network devices and services. The programmable network solution helps service providers reduce costs of operations by as much as 20% through automation of configuration and maintenance across an intelligent network. Read more
Cisco Addresses Demand for Networking Skills in the Telco Market with Communications & Services Certifications:
Cisco rolled out a new series of certification exams and training for the telecommunications market. The latest addition to Cisco Career Certifications, called Communications & Services, is specifically designed to increase the training and development options available to service providers. The Communications & Services program will further enhance the existing range of training and certifications available to Cisco customers and cover topics such as IP routing, optical, content networking, Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS), cable, voice over IP, and security. Bell SouthBell South announced Monday it is becoming AVVID integrator and has received CPN certification for e-business centers in Miami and Atlanta. With Cisco's AVVID BellSouth is deploying VoIP both within and outside the nine-state region. BellSouth's e-Business Centers have been designated as CPN centers. BellSouth's e-Platform initiative includes state-of-the-art e-Business Centers complemented by 3.6 million miles of fiber optic cable, 1,650 central offices, 50 BellSouth Managed Facilities, 17,000 SONET rings and over 500 fast-packet switches to create a distributed e-business platform. Velocita
Velocita is announcing it has selected Cisco as the supplier for its IP+Optical network Velocita's Cisco Powered Network incorporates 144 strands of fiber, the ONS 15800 long haul DWDM System, the industry leading ONS 15454 Metro Optical Transport platform, the Cisco 7609 Internet Router, the Cisco 12400 series Internet Routers, as well as Cisco maintenance support, enabling advanced broadband services. Velocita is already implementing this equipment and plans an aggressive large-scale network deployment into 2002.
Voicenet
Voicenet is announcing a new Private-Label Telephone Service using Cisco's ATA 186. Voicenet's private-label telephony services give broadband providers the ability to deliver "second line" voice services to residential and small business customers. Voicenet's service runs over cable, DSL, T1 and frame relay. Read more
Lecstar
LecStar is launching a new VOIP service using Cisco's VOIP technology to enable ISPs to enter the long distance market. The new international service, LecStar's International Voice Over IP Network in conjunction with the Cisco ATA 186 allows anyone in the world with a dedicated Internet connection to have access to 2-way VOIP calling. With the ATA 186 device, the public Internet, and LecStar's international switching facilities, DirectTel provides customers a US telephone number and/or US 800 number, competitive US termination rates, and low country-to-country rates.
