Cisco ONS 15600 Extends Optical Portfolio and Aims at Significantly Reducing First Cost and Provisioning Time

Designed for High-Density Aggregation and Switching in Large Metropolitan Areas

DALLAS, Texas - September 16, 2002 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today introduces the latest addition to the Cisco Complete Optical Multiservice Edge and Transport (COMET) product portfolio, the Cisco ONS 15600 Multiservice Switching Platform. The Cisco ONS 15600 brings service providers greater revenue potential and can lower first cost and help achieve lowest life-cycle cost. The Cisco ONS 15600 delivers multiple network elements in a single platform designed for deployment in a carrier's point of presence (POP) or large central office.

The Cisco ONS 15600 brings the functionality of multiple metro systems, including Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) multiplexers and digital cross-connect network elements, together in one easy-to-use platform.

"The Multiservice Switching Platform (MSSP) offers significant cost advantage and increased efficiencies when compared to traditional SONET/SDH add/drop multiplexers and digital cross-connect systems," said Deb Mielke, Principal, Trelliage Network Strategies, Inc. "The ONS 15600 MSSP addresses a need in part created through the success of the ONS 15454 MSPP. While it is optimized for the predominately TDM-based services and revenues of today's environment, it still provides carriers with a foundation to help them evolve to packet infrastructures in the future."

"The Cisco ONS 15600 Multiservice Switching Platform brings greater revenue potential to carriers, can lower typical first costs by at least 40 percent, and helps achieve lowest life cycle cost when compared to architectures using broadband digital cross-connects currently available," said Ron Martin, Vice President and General Manager, Optical Transport Business Unit, Cisco Systems. "In addition to higher port densities, the Cisco ONS 15600 MSSP's footprint is significantly smaller than traditional broadband cross-connects, providing both power and real estate savings for the service provider."

New Optical Enhancements Extend Cisco COMET Portfolio

The Cisco ONS 15454 includes data application support, which uses the protection channel access to accommodate increasing data transport demands. The Cisco ONS 15327 includes Gigabit Ethernet capability for increasing demand and higher bandwidth Ethernet-based services. Enhancements to the Cisco Transport Manager include GUI circuit management and the addition of physical and digital signal links.
