SAN JOSE, Calif., May 22, 2003 - Cisco Systems Inc. today announced that Time Warner Cable, a leading provider of cable television and high-speed Internet access services, is now delivering the first Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) cable primary-line residential telephone service, Digital Phone, to customers in Portland, Maine. Using the industry-leading Cisco® Internet Protocol (IP) voice solution, Time Warner Cable is gaining significant operating efficiencies by adding their Digital Phone service to their existing Cisco powered multiservice network infrastructure.
Time Warner Cable is delivering a "triple play" bundle of services using standards-based technologies and intelligent networking based on Cisco products, including voice, video and internet access. This infrastructure also provides the foundation for future services such as video telephony and multiplayer on-line gaming.
"With Digital Phone, Time Warner Cable is able to offer combined local, in-state and long distance calling at a flat rate which will translate into substantial savings for many consumers. We chose the Cisco solution because it enables reliable and affordable voice services that can scale as Digital Phone grows" said Gerry Campbell, senior vice president, Voice, Time Warner Cable.
In addition to the new services the company is offering, Time Warner Cable's Digital Phone service recently received the Cisco Powered Network designation which identifies services that providers such as cable operators run over a network built with Cisco products from end-to-end. Because it is a member of the Cisco Powered Network program, Time Warner Cable will also benefit from joint-marketing and technology-sharing activities with Cisco.
The Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch, uBR7246VXR cable modem termination system, and MGX® 8850 voice gateway products are the essential building blocks of the fully integrated Cisco Broadband Local Integrated Services Solution (BLISS) for Cable. This solution is designed to enable cable operators to deliver IP-based voice services over their existing CableLabs® Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS®) IP network infrastructure.
"The new Time Warner Cable Digital Phone service is an exciting innovation in voice over cable. This delivers better choice and value to Time Warner Cable residential customers while offering the economic benefits of a Cisco multiservice broadband infrastructure. We are very pleased to have Time Warner Cable as a customer and are supporting their success through our BLISS and VoIP offerings" said Mark Bakies, Cisco Systems® director of marketing, Voice Technology.
The Cisco BTS 10200 also recently obtained PacketCable 1.0 Call Management Server (CMS) qualification in CableLabs Certification Wave 25 in the areas of network call signaling, dynamic quality of service, and event message support. This qualification helps assure customers that this product is capable of supporting the delivery of standards-based data and voice services.
