Creates High Speed Backbone with Cisco Solutions
New Network to Deliver Superior Services to the Government

LONDON , UK , May 1, 2002 - Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, has announced that the Swiss Federal Office for Information Technology and telecommunication (FOITT) is deploying Cisco Internet
Routers for its new high-speed network infrastructure.
With this high-speed backbone FOITT will be able to provide new services like
E-learning programmes for several strategic E-government projects, along with
Video and Voice applications. Additionally, the network will support FOITT's critical SAP implementation, and access for their key business customers and their data-intensive server farms.
"We choose Cisco products because of their leading technology and the best total cost of ownership." says Kandiah Sakthivel, Project Manager, FOITT.
MPLS
VPN is the key technology of this deal. The Swiss Federal office is aiming at offering carrier class services to other departments of the federal government and the Swiss Cantons. To achieve this FOITT chose several Cisco products to support its network. This includes 12416 Internet
Router to scale the bandwidth in the core up to 10Gbps, Cisco 7609 Internet Router as the best performing, most flexible and economical.
MPLS edge device and Cisco Catalyst 6509 to transform the existing infrastructure into a Campus based design in order to deploy end-to-end services.
"Working with Swisscom Enterprise Solutions, a solution was designed that fit the customer's needs both now and in the future. FOITT needed a solution that continues to scale with the growing demands from E-Gov,E-learning and other applications." says Moritz Wyler, Account Manager.
Swisscom Enterprise Solution, the System Integration Division of the largest Carrier in Switzerland, won the contract to build this new Network. Swisscom itself operates a large MPLS Backbone, based on Cisco Products.
