Introduction
Hello, I'm Judy Lin, Senior Vice President of the Ethernet Switching Technology Group. I want to share with you today some information about how the Cisco Smart Grid solutions can improve your efficiency by bringing intelligence to the grid.
Interview
Today's energy industry is evolving. Rising demand, green initiatives, and new innovations are transforming the industry. Traditional systems were designed for one way information flow and can't support new applications such as renewable generation and demand side management.

The Cisco Smart Grid solution combines products, services, and best of breed partner technologies to create a secure, end-to-end IP-infrastructure that enables utilities to distribute intelligence into the network that enhances visibility, communications, and control – ultimately streamlining operations for greater value and efficiency.

Cisco Smart Grid uses purpose-built networking technologies, such as ruggedized Integrated Services Routers and hardened Catalyst switches to optimize communications. This helps utilities better manage supply and demand by giving them a consolidated view of the entire systems across the different stages of generation, transmission, distribution and consumption.

With Cisco Smart Grid, consumer demand information can be collected and shared across the network, resulting in improved management. It can also be used to integrate distributed and renewable generation sources (such as wind and solar power) onto the grid. Local utilities can use this information to leverage these sources or power storage capabilities to meet demand fluctuations. This helps eliminate excess capacity and waste, optimizes asset utilization, and improves overall system reliability. In short, Cisco Smart Grid improves efficiency by bringing intelligence to the grid.
