Cisco's fiscal year 2004 first quarter was characterized by significant customer wins and technology innovations across customer segments: Enterprise, Service Provider, Commercial (small- and medium- sized businesses), and Home Networking (small office/home office). Cisco achieved significant customer wins around the globe in the advanced technology areas of IP Communications, wireless, optical and storage networking; gained traction in the service provider segment announcing deals with Verizon, Japan-based U's Communication, Australia-based Uecomm, China Netcom Group, Korea's C&M Communications, and Asia-Pacific region's Telstra; and announced a number of government and education vertical deployments.
Following are the significant innovations highlights from the past quarter:
Enterprise Segment Partner and Customer Highlights:- Cisco and IBM introduced a jointly developed solution designed to help customers further drive down the costs and complexity of managing data by providing them flexible, storage area networking (SAN) options to improve storage resource utilization.
- The Polish Border Guard announced that it's deploying a Cisco based IP telephony network to improve communications and productivity.
- Seoul, Korea's Proactive Security Technology Research Team of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) selected Cisco's storage area networking (SAN) switch for its SAN environment.
- Lufthansa Technik launched its new product niceTM - networked integrated cabin equipment - which will set new standards for cabin management and entertainment systems onboard of business and executive jets. The system has been jointly developed with Cisco Systems and Videon.
- China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec Corp.), one of China's Fortune 500 enterprises, and Cisco announced that Sinopec Corp. will upgrade its backbone network using Cisco equipment and solutions.
- In an end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) deployment, Perth's Woodside Energy chose Cisco solutions for its headquarters and at some of its offshore oil and gas rig sites.
- Cisco announced the winners of its "Growing with Technology Awards 2003." A distinguished group of small and medium-sized business owners were honored for their innovative use of networking technology.
- Cisco Gold Certified Channel Partner, Dimension Data, is deploying Cisco Aironet wireless technology at Boston Public Library, known for being the first, large free municipal library in the United States.
- Cisco Premier Certified Channel Partner, ABS, will deliver Cisco's IP telephony solution to all five schools of the Floyd County Schools District, which serves 1,800 students in southwest, Virginia.
- In the wireless arena, the City of Hasselt, Belgium will deliver wireless LAN services to its entire town center using Cisco Aironet WLAN Access Points, CiscoSecure Access Control Server and EAP-Cisco Wireless Security.
- Norway's Statoil Detaljhandel introduced WiFi hotspots and enabled its customers to get online while filling up at 300 service stations across Norway.
- In Australia, Cisco helped Adelaide central business district create the country's largest wireless local area network.
- Southeast Asia's Kasetsart University built the largest academic Wi-Fi network by deploying the Cisco Aironet wireless network.
- Cisco announced that Verizon Communications will utilize the Cisco 12000 Series Router platform in its national IP VPN network. China Netcom Group, one of the leading communications service providers in China, also chose the Cisco 12000, as well as the 7000 Series Routers for its IP/MPLS backbone and service network.
- To supply broadband services such as voice, video and data to its subscribers, broadband carriers upgraded their networks. Tokyo, Japan-based U's Communication deployed Cisco equipment for an upgrade to its core backbone, and Melbourne, Australia-based Uecomm also deployed Cisco equipment for an upgrade to its Metropolitan Ethernet network.
- One of Korea's largest cable operators, C&M Communications, is deploying Cisco optical products and switches to also satisfy demand for broadband services, such as Internet access, digital video broadcasting and videos on demand, to its more than one million subscribers.
- Telstra, the leading electronic communications and information services provider in the Asia-Pacific region, selected Cisco as its network infrastructure provider for Telstra IP Telephony.
- Cisco announced adoption of its Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology by more than 200 customers worldwide to offer new services to their business customers.
- Linksys, a division of Cisco, continues to deliver networking solutions ideal for consumers and small office/home office (SOHO) environments. Linksys announced a new Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router ideal for very small business environments with mobile employees.
- In the area of Home Networking, Linksys introduced a Wireless-B Internet Video Camera which enables the viewing of live video from a web browser. Unlike standard "web cams," the Linksys camera has its own IP address so it can connect directly to any existing Ethernet or wireless network without a PC.
- Linksys also recently announced a new family of compact desktop and rackmount unmanaged gigabit switches.
- Cisco and IBM announced a set of open software technologies designed to increase the end-to-end intelligence and responsiveness of the global IT infrastructure. The two companies also jointly developed a solution to help customers drive down costs and complexity of managing data by providing them flexible, storage area networking (SAN) options to improve storage resource utilization.
- Cisco unveiled a powerful new communications platform to enable network-based productivity gains. The new Cisco color IP Phone includes a high-resolution touch screen and additional features to expand Cisco's broad line of IP Communication devices.
- The Cisco Catalyst family of switches was expanded with new fixed configuration solutions for Gigabit Ethernet, new line cards and features on the Cisco Catalyst 6500, and Metro Ethernet capabilities were added to the Catalyst 4000 family.
- Cisco introduced the Cisco MDS 9100 series of Multilayer Intelligent fabric switches, which offers IT organizations of all sizes the ability to grow their storage area networks (SANs) over time.
- Cisco broadened its industry-leading IP Communications portfolio and expanded it Full Service Branch initiative with 10 new solution blueprints for small offices and branch locations.
- Targeted at educational institutions, Cisco and Sony Electronics announced the development of a plug-and-play, fully integrated IP monitoring solution.
- Cisco announced the latest addition to its MPLS solutions portfolio, Cisco IOS MPLS Bandwidth-Assured Layer 2 Services. Benefits include operational and capital cost savings and the ability to offer managed intranets, private voice over IP networks, intranet multimedia, and networked commerce.
- Cisco announced the SL-Series interface for the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform which helps to enable the delivery of Fibre Channel-based storage-area-network (SAN)-extension services over Synchronous Optical Network/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SONET/SDH) networks.
