Customer Highlights and Technology Innovation Fact Sheet: Fourth Quarter, Fiscal Year 2002

Cisco's Q4 FY 02 was characterized by significant customer wins and technological innovation in every customer segment: Enterprise, Service Provider and Commercial (small- and medium- sized businesses). Cisco gained important customer wins on national and international levels, further extending its partnerships with leading companies such as Sprint, BellSouth, Danske and Finama. In keeping with the Company's reputation for technological innovation, Cisco's Q4 FY 02 saw the expansion of virtually every product portfolio, including voice & IP telephony, security, storage, and network management, and wireless, among others. Following are highlights from the past quarter:
Enterprise Customer Segment:
Customer Highlights:- Reliance and Dallas Public Schools: Reliance and Dallas Public Schools selected Cisco Catalyst 6500 solutions to serve as the foundation for a significant build-out of all campus LANs.
- Dankse Bank: Denmark's leading financial institution, Danske, deployed Cisco's new CSS 11506 content switches to improve the flexibility and reliability of its internal network. Improved load-balancing across internal Windows hosts allows Danske to seamlessly roll out centralized systems and applications to an estimated 20,000 computer terminals.
- Pennsylvania Child Support Enforcement System: Pennsylvania Child Support Enforcement System (PACSES), a government-based child welfare and support organization, is implementing Cisco E-Learning solutions to improve employee training and efficiency. Specifically, PACSES is using a content delivery network to educate employees and simplify organizational systems through the power of TV and video.
- Finama Asset Management: Finama Asset Management, a subsidiary of Groupama in Paris, successfully integrated an iSCSI storage area network using Cisco SN 5420 Storage Routers. The solution enables Finama AM to consolidate its storage with a SAN while using its architecture to increase the availability of its servers.
- Wireless Retail, Inc.: Wireless Retail, Inc. a Scottsdale, AZ-based provider of wireless products and services, successfully completed beta testing of the Cisco SN 5428, a new storage router, and has begun the process of migrating from direct attached storage to a storage area network (SAN). As a medium-size business that did not have a SAN previously, Wireless Retail is the profile of the ideal customer that can benefit from deploying the Cisco SN 5428's multi-protocol SAN technology.
- Lexent: Lexent, a provider of specialized electrical services in metropolitan markets, is rolling out IP voice and video services over an IPSec VPN using Cisco's security solutions.
Technology Innovation:
- Voice and IP Telephony: Cisco expanded its voice portfolio significantly this quarter, with the Cisco Unity Bridge 2.0, the Cisco IP ICD 3.0 and Cisco IP IVR 3.0. In addition, Cisco announced a range of IP telephony options that bring enterprise class functionality and ease of use to small and medium size businesses.
- Security: Security-focused enhancements were also significant this quarter. Cisco succeeded in transmitting voice and video over an advanced virtual private network (IPSec VPN), gained VPN support for the Cisco 7400 series router, and introduced a new Cisco Powered Network designation: Multiservice VPN.
- Storage: In the storage area, Cisco launched the SN5428 Storage Router. This new product, targeted at midsize customers, allows migration to a storage area network using either the new iSCSI protocol or traditional Fibre Channel connections.
- Content Networking: With regard to content networking, Cisco unveiled the CSS 11500, a distributed, high performance and scalable content switch. In addition, integrated L4-7 options were announced for the Catalyst 6500, Cisco 7600, and Cisco CTE 1400 which optimizes the delivery of enterprise web content to fixed and mobile user devices.
- Network Management: In the network management arena, Cisco introduced a new Network Analysis Module, User Registration Tool, Wireless LAN Solution Engine and the Cisco 1105 Hosting Solution Engine. Each product helps customers simplify the deployment and management of enterprise solutions, including traditional and wireless LANs and content-rich networks.
Service Provider Customer Segment:
Customer Highlights:- Sprint: Sprint, a global communications company, selected a Cisco metro router solution comprising the Cisco 10700 and 12000 Series Internet Routers to deliver IP transit via fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet services to ISPs and carriers in major markets throughout Europe.
- Elektrizitaet Werk Kanton Thurgau (EKT): EKT, a Swiss company that supplies electricity to businesses and uses its infrastructure to provide voice and data services, selected the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH Multiservice Provisioning Platform to deliver cost-effective voice, video, and data services.
- BellSouth: BellSouth, a Fortune 100 communications services company, is implementing the most expansive Cisco wireless LAN network in the Southeast at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, to enable its healthcare providers to securely access real-time and historical clinical data via wireless devices.
- Telstra: The leading Australian service provider and a leading carrier in Asia-Pacific, Telestra, is utilizing Cisco Metro Ethernet Switching to extend its market leadership in delivering a high-speed national network that offers application-aware IP services to businesses.
Technology Innovation:
- Metro Ethernet Switching: The Metro Ethernet Switching portfolio provides the necessary infrastructure to enable a wide range of Ethernet services, such as "plug and play" Internet Protocol (IP)-based services to Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity, to business customers who need a solution that can grow as their business grows.
- Advanced ATM Multiservice: This portfolio comprises the Cisco MGX 8950 and 8830 multiservice switches and the Cisco Route Processor Module XF (RPM-XF). These products provide the world's highest switching capacity, ranging from 1.2 Gbps to 180 Gbps, and give service providers control over the pace of their network's evolution along with the flexibility to deploy new services.
- Software: Cisco introduced the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of technologies for enabling managed central services over Mulitprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) virtual private networks (VPNs). These new technologies, available in Cisco IOS. Software, deliver greater simplicity and functionality to Layer 3 MPLS VPN architectures, enabling service providers to move beyond providing connectivity services to offering their customers value-added services.
- Software (Globally Resilient IP): Cisco Globally Resilient IP is a comprehensive portfolio of new, standards-based technologies delivered in Cisco IOS. Software that enables network-wide resilience and increases network availability. With resilient IP, network hardware and software combine to improve recovery from network disruptions, creating fault transparency to the network application, user or subscriber.
- Edge Routing: New broadband capabilities and features were added to the Cisco 10000, 7200 and 7400 Internet Routers. Service providers are now able to utilize this portfolio of Cisco edge routers to aggregate both leased-line and broadband services, and add new profitable services.
- Routing: The industry's broadest portfolio of 10Gbps interfaces for the 12000 Series Internet Router, delivers 10G economies of scale anywhere in the network and enables service providers to build the most competitive IP and MPLS networks.
- DPT/RPR: Cisco introduced the industry's first 10 Gigabit DPT/RPR line cards. In addition, the Cisco 7600 Internet Router announced support for DPT/RPR technology, joining the growing portfolio of Cisco products, including: all Cisco 12000 Internet Routers, the Cisco 10700 Internet Router; and the Cisco 7200 and 7500 Series Routers.
- Optical: Cisco expanded the Complete Optical Multiservice Edge and Transport (COMET) portfolio by adding SDH functionality for international markets on ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform. Cisco also introduced the ONS 15530, a Metro DWDM platform for enterprise customers.
Commercial Customer Segment:
Customer/Program Highlights:- The Sheraton Petaluma Hotel: The Sheraton Petaluma Hotel in northern California is working with Cisco to deliver business-class converged hotel services, including IP telephony, customized content delivery via in-room Cisco IP telephones, and High Speed Internet Access (HSIA), over a converged Cisco IP network. In addition, the hotel plans to deploy video and audio conferencing and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) wireless connectivity in public areas
- Cisco Wireless Solutions Lab: The Cisco Wireless Solutions Lab, a place that gives prospective customers and solution providers the ability to view and test new WLAN applications with Cisco equipment, has been used by over 750 customers since opening in April, 2002.
- Cisco Growing with Technology Awards 2002: Over 300 small- and medium-sized businesses have been selected as finalists in a national awards program sponsored by Cisco and Fortune Small Business Magazine. The Growing with Technology Awards recognize SMBs that demonstrate how networking technology solutions can effectively address challenges and drive growth and profitability.
Technology Innovation:
- Security: Cisco introduced enhanced security services on the Cisco Catalyst 3550 and 2950 Series Intelligent Ethernet Switches to deliver more secure network administration, stronger user authentication and improved security management. Cisco also introduced a new Cisco Catalyst 3550 24-port switch for 100BaseFX multimode fiber environments and a new 1000BaseT Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC).
- Routing: Cisco announced new 800, 1700, 2600XM and 3700 Series Routers. Also, Cisco has transitioned customers to new 2600 and 1700 models at a rate of 50 percent.
