Cisco CEO John Chambers Discusses High-Tech Issues with Albright
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- October 29, 1998 -- Cisco Systems played host to U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright today as she discussed high-tech issues with Silicon Valley leaders.

"Secretary Albright's visit to Cisco underscores the growing importance of high-tech issues to global economies," said Cisco Systems President and CEO John Chambers. "The Internet Economy is driving economic growth and reshaping the fortunes of business, countries and people."

The roundtable event allowed Silicon Valley leaders to hear from Secretary Albright about the Asian economic situation and also share their view that the high-tech industry can help address Asia's economic challenges.

The leaders of high-tech companies who met with Secretary Albright collectively represent one-third of Silicon Valley's employees and about 60 percent of the local market capitalization.

Exports are a critical component of Silicon Valley growth. Twenty-eight percent of all U.S. exports are manufactured by California companies and 62 percent of California's exports are high-tech.
