Cisco Enables Intercompany Communications for Cisco TelePresence
BT demonstrates first intercompany capabilities for secure, "in person" communications
SAN JOSE, Calif. - December 6, 2007 - Marking the one-year anniversary of Cisco TelePresence, the breakthrough technology for virtual, "in-person" communications, Cisco today announced that it is delivering intercompany capabilities for Cisco TelePresence and has successfully demonstrated the solution with BT through a secure connection across the BT Global Services network. This groundbreaking technological advancement will provide businesses with the flexibility and security to have "in person" meetings with customers, partners and suppliers with the ease of a simple phone call.
Cisco has worked closely with key service providers, such as BT, throughout the development of the intercompany Cisco TelePresence architecture. Cisco TelePresence integrates advanced audio, ultra-high-definition video and interactive collaboration tools with the underlying network as the platform to deliver an immersive meeting experience. BT's existing Unified Communication Video Collaboration solution is based on the Cisco TelePresence solution.

The ability to use Cisco TelePresence with end to end security and quality of service between organizations opens the doors for organizations to benefit from greater customer intimacy, tighter supply chain connections, in-person discussions and negotiations or improved customer service, all while being more environmentally sensitive. Cisco TelePresence is being used by many organizations to speed decision making, improve cross-cultural communications, scale scarce resources and move products to market faster.

The intercompany Cisco TelePresence architecture provides comprehensive security at the endpoint through authentication and encryption, in the enterprise network with firewall and NAT traversal, and in the service provider network through topology hiding and MPLS VPNs. Topology hiding is accomplished in the service provider network with the Cisco XR 12000 Multi-Service Blade using session border functionality. NAT and firewall traversal will be enabled through the Cisco Unified Border Element. Ease of use for the end user is maintained through directory and "one button to push" scheduling capabilities.
Cisco TelePresence Interoperability
In addition to enabling service providers to deploy commercial intercompany Cisco TelePresence services via a fully-validated reference architecture, Cisco is also announcing the ability to interoperate with standards-based video conferencing.
With Cisco TelePresence interoperability, customers can bring existing standards-based videoconferencing sessions into a Cisco TelePresence System 3000 or Cisco TelePresence System 1000 meeting. Enhancements to the existing product line deliver interoperability with virtually all standards-based videoconferencing systems installed today while providing customers with a strategy to expand their collaborative functionality to a wider audience as they manage their Cisco TelePresence roll-outs. With Cisco TelePresence interoperability, the meeting will preserve the experience for Cisco TelePresence users, while allowing standards-based video conferencing users to participate.
Interoperability works through the Cisco TelePresence Multipoint Switch and Cisco Unified Video Conferencing, which support multipoint for standard video conferencing streams as well. Standards supported include CIF, H.323 and G.711. Cisco TelePresence interoperability features will ship in Q2 2008.
