Fourth Quarter FY '07 Technology & Customer Highlights
Cisco's fiscal year 2007 fourth quarter was characterized by strong technology announcements and significant customer wins around the world in each market segment and in all targeted vertical areas. Key announcements were also issued from the Networkers at Cisco Live conference, which was held July 22-26, 2007.
Globally, Cisco announced its vision for next-generation data centers and broad array of innovative new data center products and solutions that will enable customers to better utilize their data center resources, deploy more robust business continuance, build cost-effective storage area networks, and enhance data security.
Cisco, EMC and Microsoft aligned to offer a comprehensive technology architecture to help protect and share sensitive government information. The Secure Information Sharing Architecture (SISA) combines applications, information infrastructure and networking technologies to help protect customers' existing IT investments.
The Cisco 12000 Series routing platform surpassed the $10 billion mark in revenue in 10 years, with more than 35,000 systems installed globally since its introduction in September of 1997. In addition, since first product shipment in August 2004, Cisco has shipped 900 CRS-1s to more than 85 providers to continue to drive residential and business IP service growth.
In fiscal year 2007 fourth quarter, Cisco completed the acquisition of WebEx, a market leader in on-demand collaboration applications and also completed the acquisition of BroadWare, a leading provider of IP-based video surveillance software.
Following are select new product announcements from the fourth quarter:
- An internet streaming to content delivery system, helping enable providers to deploy next-generation video entertainment systems.
- A major extension to Cisco's Unified Wireless Network family included a new wireless location solution and a new unified wireless network software release designed to mobilize assets across an enterprise environment.
- Cisco In-Store Mobility Solutions were introduced to help transform retail store environments by delivering highly secure, manageable and extensible mobile solutions that enable businesses to improve their operations and enhance the consumer experience.
- Linksys introduced enhanced entry-level Gigabit smart switches for small businesses and n easy-to-use Web-based interface that helps small businesses to manage and configure their networks without a dedicated IT staff.
- A Universal Edge QAM solution enables maximum spectrum efficiency and rapid expansion of Video-On-Demand, switched digital video and high-speed data services.
- Self-Defending Network v. 3.0, extends Cisco's self-defending network strategy to include wide traffic inspection capabilities, combining the depth of network-level security with the breadth of capabilities for inspecting email, Web and instant messaging traffic.
- Combined Endeavor 2007, the world's largest multinational communications interoperability exercise, is using an all-IP infrastructure powered by Cisco equipment to test and document the interoperability of vital communication systems of 42 nations for multinational forces deployed in humanitarian, peacekeeping and disaster-relief efforts.
- The VFrame Data Center (VFrame DC), an orchestration platform that leverages network intelligence to provision resources together as virtualized services, greatly reducing application deployment times, improving overall resource utilization and offering greater business agility.
Following are select customer announcements from the fourth quarter:
U.S. and Canada
- Scottrade announced implementation of a new, worldclass datacenter that will allow Scottrade to continue to grow its business and meet the needs of its customers by being capable of processing up to one million transactions per day.
- Canada's leading diversified cable, telecommunications, media and information services company, Rogers Communications, has selected Cisco TelePresence to improve productivity and collaboration between its offices across Canada.
- Wachovia Corporation has also completed its first deployment of Cisco TelePresence. The company launched the pilot to enable virtual face-to-face meetings across multiple locations as an innovative approach to address Wachovia's increasing geographic presence.
- NTELOS announced their deployment of the Cisco CRS-1 to support converged business and residential services including Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPNs and IPTV.
- Sprint delivers converged services with enhanced wireless WAN solution, enabled by Cisco IP-NGN innovation. The customer now has a choice of a fully integrated wireless and wireline solution to support their IP/MPLS networking needs.
- The Government of Saskatchewan is deploying a Cisco Outdoor Wireless Network Solution to provide free Internet access to businesses, residents and visitors across the Province's largest four cities. The Saskatchewan! Connected initiative is Canada's largest outdoor wireless network and the first of its kind to be supported on a provincial or state level in North America.
- Digicel extended their cellular network for service and customer growth with Cisco IP NGN. The carrier determined that the Cisco 7600 IP Transport Protocol (ITP) solution could help it expand its signaling network while keeping costs and training requirements relatively low.
- The First American Corporation, America's largest provider of business information, has partnered with Cisco and AT&T in its data center consolidation in order to deliver mortgage, real estate and financial information and services more efficiently.
European Markets
- Neuf Cegetel, one of the leading alternative operators in France, has chosen the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture to transform its network to deliver both residential and corporate IP services over the next three years.
- Airbus has completed deployment of a Cisco Unified Communications system to help improve collaboration, increase productivity and simplify its communications infrastructure, which will support 45,000 employees. The completion of the deployment marks the shipping of 12 million Cisco Unified IP Phones.
- Bredbaand Nord, the Danish utility company, has launched video services over a Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) platform comprising a headend from Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco company, and a Cisco Ethernet fiber-to-the-home (E-FTTH) network. The initial service to customers is designed to provide up to 46 channels of video over a connection specified at 100 megabit per second (Mbps)* direct to the home with voice and data services to complete a triple-play offering.
Emerging Markets
- Kazakh Telecom, Kazakhstan's national operator, upgraded its data network platform to provide its customers with a wide range of advanced communication services using the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System platform.
- Aga Khan University Hospital, in Kabul, Afghanistan, launched telemedicine, a first-of-its-kind solution in Afghanistan to expand healthcare access and delivery across the country. Using broadband technology, wireless video consultation and digital image transfer, the telemedicine project will provide hospitals in Afghanistan with real-time access to specialist diagnosis, treatment and training expertise from abroad.
APAC
- Bapatla Engineering College, located in Bapatla, India, will deploy the Cisco Digital Media System to extend the classroom environment and create anywhere, anytime learning experiences. The Cisco Digital Media System will virtualize Baptala's classroom environment with remote broadcast and viewing of lectures and on-demand video and other materials. The college will stream live, sessions conducted by visiting professors and subject matter experts to the classrooms. Lectures can be viewed online in 15 classrooms and 40 "e-classrooms" simultaneously.
- PCCW Ltd., the leading telecommunications provider in Hong Kong, has selected a Cisco optical networking solution (ONS) to help strengthen its Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) services for its enterprise customers.
Japan
- The University of Tokyo Hospital adopted Cisco to expand its network and build a centrally managed wireless LAN system.
