Cisco's fiscal year 2007 third quarter was characterized by major technology announcements and significant customer wins around the world in all target vertical areas and market segments as well as key announcements coming from Cisco's annual Worldwide Partner Summit.
Globally, Cisco entered into a venture capital initiative in Russia, to pursue direct investment opportunities and investments into local venture capital teams targeting the technology industry. Regus Group, the world's leading provider of workplace solutions, selected Cisco to provide the first public TelePresence service offering, enabling Regus' clients to book virtual meetings at any of 50 selected locations.
Cisco and IBM expanded their Global Services Alliance to provide product maintenance services for customers in 46 new countries and unveiled their intent to deliver a new platform for unified communications and collaboration client development. Cisco also announced expanded interoperability with Microsoft to provide collaborative capabilities for customers using Cisco Unified Communications solutions with select Microsoft products. SAP AG and Cisco expanded their relationship to develop network-aware SOA solutions that leverage Cisco SONA and SAP Netweaver architectures.
In fiscal year 2007 third quarter, Cisco announced definitive agreements to acquire Five Across, a leading vendor in social networking, and SpansLogic, a leading provider of processors that improve packet processing speeds across the network. Cisco and WebEx signed a definitive merger agreement for Cisco to acquire WebEx. Cisco completed the acquisitions of Utah Street Networks, Inc., which uses software infrastructure to create and maintain online communities, Reactivity, a leading XML gateway provider and NeoPath Networks, a provider of high-performance storage management solutions.
Cisco reached a major milestone as the enterprise installed base of wireless access points reached four million driven by increased enterprise demand for mobility services and unprecedented channel penetration in key markets.
Following are select new product announcements from the third quarter:
- Cisco Smart Business Communications System helps channel partners to enhance profitability, remain more competitive and improve customer relationships.
- Complete IPTV Solution for North American RLECs from Cisco and SES Americom, to easily, quickly and cost-effectively offer IPTV to their subscribers using an innovative solution that combines the Cisco IP Next-Generation Networks (IP NGNs) with SES AMERICOM's IP-PRIMETM IPTV service.
- Cisco Secure Wireless Solution, a tested and validated wireless solution to secure business critical applications and data, as well as business environments.
- Cisco Unified Communications system 6.0 introduced capabilities that will dramatically improve the productivity of mobile employees and cost-effectively deliver Unified Communications to small and medium-sized businesses.
- Cisco 12000 Series Router enhancements to enable delivery of predictable business services including Cisco TelePresence and managed security.
- Cisco TelePresence capabilities were extended to enable virtual meetings in multiple locations at one time and to provide businesses with the freedom to organize meetings with customers or partners outside the corporate firewall.
- Cisco ONS 15454 software and hardware upgrades that give service providers and enterprises more flexibility in delivering new services as well as a greater ability to scale their networks.
- Cisco IP Interoperability Collaboration System 2.0 (IPICS), which helps enable personnel within the same or different agencies to communicate across previously isolated radio, IP and non-IP networks.
- Significant wireless enhancements to the company's Integrated Services Routers, adding an integrated third-generation (3G) wireless connectivity option and doubling the scalability of its integrated wireless local-area network (LAN) support.
- Significant security enhancements highlighted by greater collaboration between products that ensure greater control against threats and secure communications across a business.
- Key additions to Cisco's IP-based video surveillance product portfolio that strengthen protection of people and assets while preserving existing investments.
- Linksys introduced an eight-port analog telephone adapter for connecting multiple phones to IP networks for VoIP service and two new solutions to its LVS line of small business phones.
- Scientific Atlanta announced new-generation IP statistical multiplexing (stat mux) to support high-quality, low-bit-rate, bandwidth-saving video delivery and provide breakthrough performance for creating or expanding channel bouquets.
- Scientific Atlanta also introduced a versatile decoder that will provide widespread flexibility to service providers through support of multiple conditional access (CA) systems and a streamlined path for delivering more video over existing satellite bandwidth.
Following are select customer announcements from the third quarter:
U.S. and Canada:
- Videotron is using the Cisco Wideband solution to conduct a pilot test to offer customers Internet speeds up to 100 Mbps, which is five times faster than its current Extreme Plus high speed Internet service.
- SAVVIS launched a new managed security service for its business customers through which SAVVIS configures, supports, manages and monitors the newest and most advanced security device from Cisco - the Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA).
- City of El Paso, Texas is deploying Cisco's wireless mesh solution for an outdoor wireless network that will help improve government efficiencies and provide Internet access and application delivery to citizens and businesses.
- BendBroadband, a privately owned, nationally recognized cable operator, has deployed a storage area network (SAN) based on Cisco technology to improve customer service, reduce operating costs, and improve application performance.
- Regus Group has selected Cisco technology to provide the first public TelePresence service offering that will enable Regus' clients to book a virtual meeting at any of 50 selected locations globally.
- Panalpina Group and Sabre Holdings, along with hundreds of other customers, selected Cisco's WAN optimization solution to increase applications performance of the WAN.
- ScottsMiracle-Gro, the world's leading marketer of branded consumer lawn and garden products, has deployed Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) solutions to increase branch office worker productivity by accelerating the performance of business critical applications.
- Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is now providing video learning programs from many of its animal exhibits throughout the 168-acre park using Cisco wireless mesh technology provided by Total Systems Integration, Inc.
- SAP selected Cisco TelePresence system for high-end virtual meetings to foster internal collaboration globally.
- University of Tulsa announced that it is using Cisco's Unified Wireless Network to deliver wireless access across its campus, serving more than 4,000 students and 1,100 employees.
European Markets:
- Belfast Institute, Ireland's largest provider of higher education and training in Northern Ireland, is deploying a Cisco Unified Wireless Network around its central campus.
- Province of Brescia in Italy will use a Cisco Outdoor Wireless mesh solution to deliver wireless broadband to connect over 200 rural towns.
- Media Saturn, Europe's biggest retailer of consumer electronics, is working with BT and Cisco to deploy a new Cisco TelePresence solution.
- Get, Norway's leading cable provider is using Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) technology with Cisco EuroDOCSIS 3.0 to upgrade its network to support accelerating broadband traffic growth.
- Birmingham City Council, is planing to connect 450 schools, 60 libraries and 240 council-related offices in one of the UK's most advanced local government networks.
- TeliaSonera, a leading telecommunications company in the Nordic and Baltic region, is deploying the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System at the core of its Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP-NGN) to support multimedia and Internet traffic growth.
- Volvo Trucks France, working with Cisco and Nokia, commenced beta field trials of the Enterprise Mobility Solution, a fixed-mobile converged IP communications solution featuring Nokia dual mode devices, at its central marketing operation
- Abertis Telecom, the Spanish broadcaster, has expanded the regional program delivery capability of Spain's regional television association, Federation of Autonomic Radio and Television Entities (FORTA), by nearly 40 percent with a Scientific Atlanta® video contribution network platform.
- The City of Glasgow, Scotland, is implementing an e-government strategy to improve delivery of services to 600,000 citizens by using the Cisco Unified Communications system.
Emerging Markets:
- Bulgarian Telecommunications Company has built on its Cisco IP Next Generation Network (IP NGN) to enhance service offerings to its enterprise clients and 2.5 million-plus residential phone and Internet customers.
- MTN South Africa will deliver a suite of data, voice and video services over an IP Next-Generation Network, the core of which is based on the Cisco CRS-1 routing system.
- Banca Promérica in Costa Rica is deploying a Cisco Unified Communications solution across all branch banking locations.
APAC:
- According to a study by the NTF Group, commissioned by Cisco, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia, has experienced dramatic improvements in staff productivity, potential cost savings and patient care with a new mobile wireless system in the Emergency Department according to a study by the NTF Group.
- The National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has deployed a Cisco Unified Wireless Network solution across its three campuses to support administration, help enable outdoor instruction, and allow more students to attend classes with laptops.
- Hong Kong Cyberport and Cisco announced a pioneering model at Cyberport for a city-wide Wi-Fi network empowered by a Cisco wireless local area network.
- KTF, one of Korea's major mobile communications providers, has adopted Cisco 7600 IP Transfer Point to strengthen its third-generation (3G) mobile communications services.
Japan:
- Tohoku-Electric Power Co., Inc. has selected the Cisco wireless networking solution to build large-scale wireless LAN networks connecting 13,000 devices across 122 locations to improve communication and information sharing among employees.
- Nippon Express Co. Ltd., Japan's largest moving service firm, is supporting Cisco's move to a new Tokyo office with an item tracking system using RFID tags and Cisco Application-Oriented Networking (AON).
Following are select channel partner program announcements from the third quarter:
- Easy Lease Program in Turkey, designed to fuel the expansion of small and medium-sized businesses in this important emerging market. The introduction of Easy Lease is another milestone in Cisco's US $275 million investment in Turkey announced last year.
- Cisco Service Contact Center and Cisco E-Consulting for Partners, two global offerings to help channel partners simplify the process of selling and delivering services, enhance their services portfolios, and improve customer satisfaction and loyalty.
- 2006 annual Partner Summit Global Channel Partner award winners were selected from a list of more than 3,000 Cisco Certified Channel Partners worldwide for their outstanding performance in 2006.
