92 Bay Area Nonprofits Receive Grants from Cisco Foundation

Silicon Valley Impact Grants Award $1.38 Million to Support Educational Opportunities and Health Care Programs in Underserved Communities

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 25, 2007--The Cisco® Foundation today announced the 2007 recipients of its annual Silicon Valley Impact Grants, a program that provides funding to nonprofit organizations within 50 miles of the Cisco headquarters in San Jose. 92 organizations each received a $15,000 grant from the Silicon Valley Impact Grants to support programs providing educational access and health services in underserved communities. In total, the Cisco Foundation awarded $1,380,000 in Silicon Valley Impact Grants to assist well-managed, innovative Bay Area nonprofits.

Since 1993, the Cisco Foundation has provided nearly $17 million in grants to 1,300 nonprofits serving local area communities. The 2007 Silicon Valley Impact Grants focused on two funding priorities including organizations that create educational opportunities and foster classroom innovation, and supporting health-related programs that benefit underserved populations. The Cisco Foundation gave primary consideration to programs that can be replicated through use of technology and offer online resources to support the community.

"Cisco and the Cisco Foundation are focused on building stronger, healthier global communities through strategic social investment that include cash, products and people expertise" said Michael Yutrzenka, executive director, Cisco Foundation. "We are excited to be supporting local nonprofits that share similar values and demonstrate sustainability in both business practices and programs."

Improving educational opportunities is a core focus of Cisco's social investment strategy. Of this year's Silicon Valley Impact Grant recipients the majority offer a range of educational services, such as providing teacher training, fostering classroom innovation, promoting the arts and supporting adult job re-entry training programs.

"The support of the Cisco Foundation helps offset the costs to recruit, train, support, and provide ongoing professional development for our corps of teachers who are working relentlessly to ensure children growing up in San Jose's lowest income communities make significant academic gains," said Eric Scroggins, executive director for Teach for America. "Cisco is helping to channeling the talent and energy our nation's most accomplished college graduates toward improving opportunities for children growing up in poverty, creating an unparalleled pipeline of leadership for educational and social reform."

"The Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association is delighted to be a recipient of a Cisco Silicon Valley Impact Grant to support our marine education program," said Linda Hunter, executive director of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association. "The LiMPETS program is an in-depth education and monitoring curriculum designed to provide students with the opportunity to experience the scientific process first-hand. By conducting monitoring projects in both the rocky intertidal and sandy beach ecosystems, junior high and high school students develop an understanding and interest in the scientific process, not found in the traditional classroom setting."
