First Quarter FY' 07 Technology & Customer Highlights
Cisco's fiscal year 2007 first quarter was characterized by major technology innovations including the launch of Cisco's TelePresence solution, the introduction of a new emerging technology called Digital Media System, and an extension to Cisco's industry-leading Carrier Routing System, the CRS-1 4-Slot. Cisco also signed a definitive agreement to acquire Orative Corp to extend Cisco's Unified Communications portfolio to mobile devices such as cell phones and smartphones.
In the first quarter of fiscal year 2007, Cisco also completed the acquisitions of Arroyo Video Solutions, Meetinghouse Data Communications and Ashley Laurent's intellectual property and selected assets.
Following are select technology announcements from the first quarter:
- Cisco TelePresence, a new technology solution that creates unique in-person experiences between people, places and events whether they are across town or across the world.
- Cisco Digital Media System, a new emerging technology that will enable organizations to use business-quality, dynamic video and audio to easily connect customers, employees, partners or students anywhere, anytime.
- CRS-1 Four-Slot, an extension to Cisco's industry-leading Carrier Routing System, that provides 320 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) of total switching capacity in the industry's most compact 40 Gbps-per-slot chassis.
- Solutions with Advanced Technologies (S.W.A. T.) represents Cisco's unique response to the call for effective public safety networking that unifies chain-of-command communications to improve emergency response and operational efficiency.
- Cisco Secure Services Client 4.0, an advanced security software that provides enterprises with a single authentication framework for multiple devices to securely access wired and wireless networks.
- Cisco Catalyst switching portfolio enhancements that help enable more scalable architectures, easier operational manageability, and comprehensive resilience.
- An integrated branch-office solution that accelerates the performance of any TCP-based application across the wide-area network and enables the consolidation of the branch office server, storage and backup infrastructure for easier management and lower cost.
- New innovations from Cisco and Scientific Atlanta announced at IBC 2006 in Amsterdam to help broadcasters and service providers "Deliver the Connected Life".
- Enhancements to Cisco's Unified Communications system to more effectively connect businesses of all sizes and improve the communications experience in mobile and contact center environments.
- Enhancements to Cisco's Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network architecture to ease deployment of a wide range of business-focused and consumer-based services.
- Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link (WRT350N) to deliver Wireless-N networking speeds with the ability to store entertainment content.
- Linksys Easy Link Advisor (LELA) helps consumers realize the full potential of their wireless network.
Following are select customer announcements from the first quarter:
U.S and Canada:
- W.W. Grainger, Hannaford Bros. Co., Mitsukoshi and SUBWAY restaurants deployed the Cisco Unified Communications for Retail solution to enhance customer experience and improve operational efficiency for retailers around the globe.
- Cisco experienced strong momentum in the financial services market with firms such as Bank Midwest, GreenStone Farm Credit Services and Richardson Partners Financial Ltd investing in its Smart Business Communications platform.
- Hearst Corporation selected the Cisco Unified Wireless Network at Hearst Tower in New York, becoming one of the largest "green" enterprise deployments of wireless.
- The City of Dublin, Ohio, and DHB Networks, have announced that an innovative citywide wireless (Wi-Fi) network has been installed in the city's metro core to improve public safety and drive economic development in the region.
- The Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado, will design and implement a resilient Cisco Unified Communications solution for its new facility.
- Cisco's Unified Communications solution is being deployed in one of the world's first voice and video over IP call centers as a part of the Health Care Interpreter Network.
- WeatherBug, the leading provider of live, local weather information services, has built its services on Cisco IP networking technology.
- Rocky Mountaineer Vacations (RMV), an award-winning Canadian provider of premiere travel, is boosting efficiency with a secure, wireless solution from Cisco.
- PureVideo Networks, publisher of popular video websites StupidVideos.com and GrindTV.com, became one of the first companies to adopt the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch with the Application Control Engine (ACE).
- AT&T completed initial testing of Cisco's TelePresence solution to help ensure network interoperability and performance; Verizon Business will soon begin technology testing.
- Verizon Business also became the first U.S.-based provider to utilize the Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) solution to enhance its Resilient Network Attached Storage (RNAS) offering.
- Charter Communications, Inc. is expanding availability of its converged data, voice and video ("triple-play") services with a network based on the Cisco IP NGN architecture.
Europe:
- The City of Amsterdam is building a city-wide glass fiber network using Cisco Ethernet Fiber to the home technology to deliver telephony, TV and Internet services.
- Millennium BCP, the largest private financial group in Portugal, selected Cisco's retail banking solution to transform its communication infrastructure to a converged IP network.
- Cable & Wireless U.K. expanded its deployment of the Scientific Atlanta iLYNXTM platform to create a nationwide contribution and distribution platform on behalf of a major U.K. broadcaster.
- TDC Kabel TV A/S selected Scientific Atlanta for its versatile, MPEG-4 advanced video compression (AVC) encoder for delivery of cable and DSL video services in Denmark.
- HEF Bredbånd A/S, the service provider arm of the HEF utility company serving the Vesthimmerland region of Northern Denmark, will build a new 5,000 kilometer fiber optic network based on the Cisco IP NGN architecture with ServiceFlex design.
- Italtel announced a new joint solution with Cisco to help service providers address the rapid growth in the managed IP communications services market.
Emerging Markets:
- Cisco announced a significant investment initiative in Turkey totaling up to US $275 million (Turkey New Lira 400 million) over five years to address the areas of country transformation, innovation, entrepreneurship, leasing and finance, education and staffing.
- To promote accelerated Broadband growth in Argentina, Cisco launched the Cisco Broadband Barometer, an indicator that will show the high-speed Internet growth for Argentina.
Japan:
- Fujitsu Limited and Cisco launched sales in Japan of a four-slot model of the co-branded "Fujitsu and Cisco CRS-1" Carrier Routing System.
Asia Pacific:
- The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the country's central bank, has selected advanced technologies from Cisco to help increase operational efficiencies in its countrywide infrastructure and provide a platform to regulate the banking system.
- Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) can now enjoy improved wired and wireless Internet access following a network upgrade by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.
- Alcan Gove, a world leader in aluminum and packaging, with operations in 60 countries and around 65,000 employees, is using Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) software and Unified Communications to improve productivity and reduce operational costs.
- Wenona School in North Sydney, Australia, has deployed Cisco's wireless networking technology to deliver 'learning anytime, anywhere'.
- The Hammond Care Group, recognized as a leader in research, technology and development in Australia and overseas, particularly in dementia care, is deploying a Cisco IP communications system for its 1,200 residents and staff.
- Optus, an Australian leader in integrated telecommunications, selected Cisco to provide an end-to-end campus communications solution at its new head office in Sydney's Macquarie Park, serving 6,500 staff.
- KT, Korea's leading service provider, selected the Cisco CRS-1 as the company's KORNET backbone network solution.

- Two new ecosystem partner programs to help accelerate the development and adoption of physical security solutions that run over IP networks.
- Cisco Vertical Select Program to help accelerate the growth of a channel partner's vertical business while providing mutual customers with access to channel partners that understand specific vertical market needs.
- The Master Security Specialization, a new brand that represents the highest level of partner specialization and depth of expertise.
- Cisco Channel Partner Program in Vietnam to help local channel partners meet customer demand for technology skills breadth, advanced technology skills depth, and lifecycle services capabilities.
