Customer Highlights and Technology Innovation

Cisco's fiscal year 2006 fourth quarter was characterized by major milestones across a number of key technology areas and vertical industries. Cisco Unified Communications adoption continued to accelerate with over 8 million Unified IP phones installed worldwide; more than 60 service providers have adopted Cisco's Carrier Routing System, or CRS-1, in the first two years since its introduction; and Cisco's core enterprise networking platform, the Catalyst 6500, surpassed $20 billion in sales. In addition, Cisco's enterprise customer installed base surpassed the 3 million wireless access points (APs) milestone, indicating Cisco's leadership in deploying a Unified Wireless Network for an array of new mobility services.

Cisco also achieved significant technology innovations and customer wins across all target markets: Enterprise, Service Provider, Commercial (small- and medium-sized businesses), and Consumer/Home Networking. Worldwide customer wins in unified communications, routing, switching, security, wireless, and storage area networking (SAN) continued across all vertical industries.

Following are significant highlights from the past quarter:

Enterprise Market, Customer and Partner Highlights:

  • DaimlerChrysler, Europe's first Catalyst 6500 customer, helped Cisco reach $20 billion in sales since its introduction in 1999.
  • Cisco has shipped over 8 million Cisco Unified IP telephones, with the milestone phone purchased by Deutsche Bank, demonstrating continued adoption of Cisco Unified Communications technology.
  • The Istanbul Police Department chose Cisco's network routing and contact center technology for the city's information and security system.
  • Valero Energy Corp., the largest refiner in North America, chose Cisco to provide a resilient communications system in the event of emergency or disaster. This solution combines a Cisco integrated services router with the new Cisco IP very small aperture terminal (VSAT) network module.
  • Cisco will provide the core network infrastructure for Combined Endeavor 2006, a two-week operation designed to test and document the interoperability of vital communication systems for multinational forces.
  • University Hospitals Health System selected Cisco for its converged IP network that supports more than 23,500 physicians, nurses and support staff at more than 150 locations in northeast Ohio.
  • Oakwood Healthcare System, which serves over a million people in 35 communities in Michigan, deployed a storage area network (SAN) based on Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer Directors and Cisco MDS 9216i Multilayer Fabric Switches.

Commercial Market, Customer and Partner Highlights:

  • Vancouver Film Studios improved client service, reduced costs and grew operations after implementing Cisco Unified Communications and Berbee InformaCast.
  • Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) is using technology from Cisco to unify voice, video, data and wireless communications into a single, airport-wide Cisco Unified Communications system.
  • Nevada's Clark County is relying on Cisco networking, wireless and security solutions to unify communications at the county's Regional Justice Center.
  • Barclay Group, a real-estate developer in Scottsdale, Ariz., worked with IPVision, a Cisco SMB Select Partner, to improve shopping mall security with a Cisco IP video survelance solution.

Service Provider Market, Customer Highlights:

  • China Telecom selected the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture as the foundation of its 2006 ChinaNet network expansion and named Cisco as the primary equipment provider for the project.
  • Yahoo! BB, one of Japan's largest broadband service providers, deployed the high-capacity 40Gbps, interface card on its Cisco Carrier Routing System (Cisco CRS-1).
  • Rainbow Media, a subsidiary of Cablevision, selected multiple Scientific Atlanta PowerVu digital content distribution systems for the analog-to-digital migration of North American programming delivery to its affiliates.
  • Telefónica Deutschland is extending and upgrading its network for VoIP services with Cisco IP NGN solutions.
  • Flemish cable operator Interkabel chose Cisco IP NGN technology to upgrade its cable network to provide interactive broadband services and multimedia applications such as IP television and video surveillance.
  • Cox Communications has initiated cellular backhaul service to help wireless service providers add increased reliability and flexibility to their networks.
  • TV Cabo, Portugal's largest pay-TV operator, chose the Cisco Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS) as part of its IP NGN platform.
  • VTR, Chilean telecommunications and cable provider, deployed the Cisco CRS-1, the core component of the Cisco IP NGN architecture.

Consumer/Home Networking Highlights:

Product and Technology Innovation Highlights:

  • The CRS-1, the core platform for the Cisco IP NGN architecture, has been adopted by more than 60 providers in the first two years since its introduction.
  • Cisco unveiled a new wideband solution involving channel bonding, low-cost edge quadrature amplitude modulators (QAMs) and cable modems together with the industry-leading Cisco uBR10012 cable modem termination system (CMTS).
  • Cisco completed the acquisition of the privately-held companies Metreos Corp and Audium Corp. Both of these companies offer easy to use, drag and drop, application creation/integration environments which will strengthen Cisco's Service Oriented Network Architecture (SONA).
  • Cisco announced three new Cisco 7200 Series Router products, delivering wide-area network (WAN) and metropolitan-area network (MAN) services aggregation.
  • Cisco announced innovations at the network edge, spanning layers of IP NGN architecture, to enable advanced service development, deployment and growth for global providers.
  • Cisco introduced the Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP BladeSystem c-Class, the latest product for its integrated switching portfolio.
  • Cisco announced two new models in its Cisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security appliance family.
  • Cisco announced the delivery of NAC Appliance 4.0, the latest edition of the company's Network Admission Control solution designed to protect businesses from information security risks ushered in by non-compliant users and devices.
