Customer Highlights and Technology Innovation
Cisco's fiscal year 2006 first quarter was characterized by significant technology innovations and customer wins across all customer markets: Enterprise, Service Provider, Commercial (small- and medium- sized businesses), and Consumer/Home Networking.
Cisco achieved significant worldwide customer wins in various markets, including IP Communications/VoIP, routing, switching, security, wireless, storage area networking (SAN) and optical; announced vertical deployments in transportation, government, healthcare, financial services, and education; expanded relationships with several service providers, including Cable & Wireless, MCI, Inc., and Softbank BB; and reinforced the company's commitment for the Internet and education with its investment in the Gulf Coast rebuilding efforts, and for its development in geographical growth areas such as in India. Cisco also announced a definitive agreement to acquire a privately-held company in the network memory space.
Following are significant innovations highlights from the past quarter:
Enterprise Market, Customer and Partner Highlights:
- Cisco broadened the Cisco Medical-Grade Network with the Cisco Clinical Connection Suite consisting of four integrated clinical solutions - Nurse Call, Patient Monitoring, Location-Based Services and Collaborative Care - that provide faster, smarter healthcare with the ability to direct, locate and prioritize information for clinicians and their patients.
- Intel and Cisco expanded their existing alliance to deliver capabilities that enhance the reliability of wireless LANs and deliver higher-quality services, and allow enterprises to use computers and the network as a combined defense against security threats.
- Pep Boys installed Cisco's 500,000th Cisco integrated services router, marking a major milestone for Cisco.
- Cisco reached a major milestone in the IP Communications market with the sale of its six-millionth Internet Protocol (IP) phone worldwide.
- Nlets, the International Justice and Public Safety Information Sharing Network, upgraded to a standards-based Cisco Internet Protocol (IP) network.
- The Agricultural Bank of China HeBei Branch selected Cisco 2800 series integrated services routers to upgrade its third-tier provincial network, connecting its 250 sub-branches and outlets in the province.
- South America-based, cell-phone carrier Vivo deployed the Cisco Mobile Exchange (CMX) solution to streamline measurement and billing systems developed by Portugal Telecom Inovação (PTI).
Commercial Market, Customer Highlights:
- Cisco introduced the Cisco Business Communications Solution, specifically designed for small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) and mid-market companies, and featuring purpose-built voice and switching products, plus support, services and financing.
- Among this year's winners of the Cisco Growing with Technology Awards are a California robotics company, an Illinois school district, and a Georgia legal services organization.
- Working with its U.S distribution partners Comstor, Ingram Micro and Tech Data, Cisco completed more than one million orders, which is nearly a 40-percent year-over-year increase and roughly 500 orders per hour.
- San Francisco-based Fenwick & West boosted IT productivity with "Phone Top" IP Phone application from AAC, a Cisco IP Communications Specialized channel partner.
- Norway-based Gran Kommune adopted the SMB focused switch, the Catalyst 500, to provide IP telephony, Internet and e-mail connections for the school, over the regional broadband network for students and teachers.
Service Provider Market, Customer Highlights:
- Hong Kong Broadband (HKBN) became the first service provider in the world to achieve the Cisco Powered Network Metro Ethernet QoS Certified status.
- MCI, Inc. is expanding its managed IP communications offerings to the business market with the launch of Managed IP PBX, based on Cisco technology, including the Cisco CallManager product suite.
- SOFTBANK BB Corp. expanded its Cisco IP Next Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture with the Cisco Carrier Routing System (CRS-1) and Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches to enable nationwide expansion of advanced video services including broadband program broadcasting and video-on-demand (VOD).
- Cable & Wireless awarded the contract to provide the IP core element for its Next Generation Network (NGN) to Cisco.
- SureWest Communications enhanced its ability to develop and deliver advanced IP video services over a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network with the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) reference architecture featuring Cisco Catalyst 4500 and 6500 Series switches.
- JAPAN TELECOM CO., Ltd. upgraded its Cisco ONS 15454-based dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networking solution.
Channel Partner Highlights:
- Cisco IP Communications Specialized Partner, Network Architects, deployed Cisco IP communications to increase safety and save money for Bernalillo County, New Mexico.
- Cisco Wireless Specialized Partner, Clare Computer Solutions, provided Brentwood California police with live, wireless video feed from selected 'high risk' establishments directly to monitors installed inside police cars.
- Cisco IP Communications Specialized Partner, Envision Networked Solutions, helped the Honolulu Board of Water Supply replace its private branch exchange (PBX) phone system with a Cisco IP Communications solution that helps save the organization money, while improving its customer service and employee productivity.
- Cisco IP Communication Specialized Partner, Information Systems Consulting, deployed Cisco IP Communications to a rural school district in Colorado, simplifying network administration and saving the district money.
Consumer/Home Networking Highlights:
- Linksys announced the WRT54GX2 Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX200 which uses MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology to bring users increased speed and range at a lower price.
- Linksys introduced its new Wireless-G USB Network Adapter and Wi-Fi Finder (WUSBF54G), making locating and connecting to a network easier.
- Linksys and Skype teamed to launch a new cordless handset to drive Internet phone calling enabling users to making free Skype calls while sitting at home or at the office.
Product and Technology Innovation Highlights:
- Cisco introduced the company's newest emerging technology, the Cisco Internet Protocol Interoperability and Collaboration System (IPICS), designed to integrate disparate push-to-talk radio systems together with other communication resources like voice, video and data devices.
- Cisco introduced the Carrier Ethernet platform that enable service providers to offer best-in-class Layer 2 and Layer 3 virtual private networks (VPNs) along with voice, video, and data (or "Triple Play") services for residential and business customers.
- Cisco announced advancements to its Network Admission Control (NAC) framework that help protect organizations from threats such as spyware, viruses and worms attempting to gain network access through a growing number of endpoint devices.
- Cisco announced the availability of the Cisco MDS 9020 Fabric Switch, a 20-port 4 gigabit per second Fibre Channel storage area networking (SAN) switch designed as a cost-effective solution to deploy high performance small and medium size SANs.
- Cisco announced plans to acquire Nemo Systems of Los Altos, Calif. Nemo Systems-provides technology in the network memory space.
- Cisco completed the acquisition of two privately-held companies:
- Sheer Networks of San Jose, Calif. and Petach Tikva, Israel, focused on intelligent network and service management products.
- KiSS Technology A/S of Hørsholm, Denmark, representing Cisco's second acquisition for its Linksys division and the company's entrance into networked entertainment.
Other Quarterly Highlights:
- Cisco announced an $80 million commitment in a multi-phase, three year education "21S Initiative" in the Gulf Coast region for reconstructing and improving schools that will begin in Mississippi and can be replicated around the country.
- Cisco unveiled its technology blueprint for higher education and announced three supporting solutions focused on security, distance learning and intelligent campuses.
- Cisco announced Connected Learning for Schools, a four-step blueprint that guides educators in the intelligent and effective use of technology to help transform schools.
- Cisco announced its investment initiative for India totaling US $1.1 billion. This announcement highlights the growing importance of the Indian market in the global economy.
- Cisco will spend approximately US $50 million to build a new one-million square foot campus in Bangalore that will support staff from Cisco's R&D, IT, Sales and Customer Support teams to be completed by June 2007.
- Cisco and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, will collaborate to support India's National E-Governance Plan. Cisco will invest U.S. $10 million to establish a rural connectivity program and set up a next generation network lab with BSLN in Chennai.
- In mid August, Cisco employees "virtually" opened The NASDAQ Stock Market from the company's San Jose, Calif. headquarters, marking the first time in NASDAQ history the ringing of the celebratory bell has occurred outside of the Big Apple.
