Cisco's fiscal year 2005 was characterized by significant technology innovations that help customers and partners develop and deploy an Intelligent Information Network. Global customers across all market segments are adopting these intelligent systems to improve productivity, profitability and to address their customers' needs. And as part of the strategy to continuously add additional intelligent capabilities across the core and advanced technology portfolios, Cisco announced definitive agreements to acquire fifteen privately-held companies and one public company.
Below outlines highlights from the year:
- The company unveiled an innovative new technology, Cisco Application-Oriented Networking, which is the first network-embedded intelligent message routing system that adds intelligence to the network, enabling businesses and organizations to better coordinate how their applications work together.
- In LAN switching, Cisco announced new innovative products for the Cisco Catalyst Switch portfolio. Cisco also introduced Catalyst products and services designed and priced specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. Softbank BB implemented the Catalyst 6500 intelligent multilayer modular switches to offer next-generation broadband content and services through Yahoo!BB.
- In the Internet routing arena, Cisco extended its CRS-1 product family with the introduction of the Cisco CRS-1 8-Slot Single-Shelf System. Cisco introduced the Cisco XR 12000 Series routers which represents the combination of the Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS) XR software with capabilities of the Cisco 12000 Series routers. The company also rolled out Integrated Services Routers for SMBs and service providers, as well as added wireless functionality to them.
- In IP Communications, Cisco achieved its goal of growing IP telephony revenues to a $1 billion per year run rate, the second advanced technology behind security to achieve this status. Cisco shipped its 5 millionth Cisco Internet Protocol (IP) telephone to British Airways. And Airbus, in conjunction with France Telecom Group and Equant, implemented a Cisco IP-based communications system to include 40,000 IP phone extensions.
- In the security arena, Cisco unveiled the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) 5500 Series, a family of multi-function security appliances. Cisco delivered more than 10 new products, software enhancements, and services across its security product portfolio. Cisco and Microsoft are working together to share and integrate their respective security technologies to help mutual customers better address the threat and impact of malicious software. Yahoo! Mail and Cisco announced their collaboration on an authentication technology designed to combat e-mail forgery by verifying the address of origin of e-mail messages. And 15 anti-virus partners who have met the criteria for interoperability with Cisco's Network Admission Control program are now delivering solutions.
- In the wireless space, Cisco announced both the Aironet access points and integrated wireless intrusion detection system capabilities, and the Cisco 2700 Series Wireless Location Appliance which tracks thousands of IEEE 802.11 enabled wireless clients from within a customer's existing wireless local area network (LAN) infrastructure. Office-products retailer Staples is providing shoppers and staff with secure wireless network connections, based on Cisco technology, in all 1,200 of its U.S.-based retail stores.
- In storage area networking, Cisco and EMC Corporation intend to provide customers with an end-to-end storage consolidation solution for remote-office data. Cisco added two products to its award-winning Cisco MDS 9000 Family of Multilayer Intelligent directors and fabric switches optimized for transporting storage area network (SAN) traffic over metro and wide area networks. Cisco also introduced software features for the 9000 Family, and unveiled significant updates to its network-based storage virtualization solutions.
- In the optical market, the company announced new and enhanced solutions for edge, metro and core multiservice optical networks. Cisco announced enhancements to its Cisco ONS 15530 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) multiservice aggregation platform. Japan Telecom implemented a Cisco optical platform using the Cisco ONS 15454 for a new telephone service.
- In the consumer/home networking market, Linksys shipped more than one million Voice over IP (VoIP) ports, making it the most successful product launch in Linksys' history. Linksys products for VoIP include a phone adapter and wired and wireless routers with phone ports. Linksys announced relationships with leading broadband VoIP service providers including AT&T CallVantage, PeopleCall in Spain, PhoneSystems.net in France, Verizon VoiceWing, and Vonage in both North America and the United Kingdom. The company also announced its Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router and Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster which provide home and mobile users with the flexibility to provide both seamless wireless access and connectivity for wired Ethernet devices in a compact design while at home or on the road. In addition, Cisco announced two acquisitions for the Linksys divisionSipura, a leader in consumer VoIP technology and KiSS Technology A/S, a leading technology provider for networked entertainment devices.
- In the Service Provider segment, Cisco experienced significant traction. British Telecom (BT) selected Cisco as a preferred supplier to build its 21st Century Network. Fujitsu Limited and Cisco announced a strategic alliance focusing on routers and switches. Sprint and Comcast selected Cisco as the strategic provider of their converged Cisco-based IP NGN. - In the Commercial segment, Cisco announced the SMB Support Assistant service offering, a tailor support service for small and medium businesses. Cisco announced the CiscoSecureTM Wireless Solution for K-12, bringing rich educational content and resources to students and teachers, while providing greater mobility, convenience and optimized security. Cisco announced the establishment of a US $50 million financing facility to help Korean small and medium-sized businesses adopt and deploy networking technologies. Oman's Ministry of Education deployed a world-leading, wireless solution, using Cisco technology, across more than 200 schools in the Sultanate.
- Cisco continues to focus on its channel partners. Cisco unveiled the Solution Incentive Program (SIP) which supports collaboration between networking partners and application developers to provide greater customer value. Cisco Systems and Cisco Systems Capital will add $750 million in short-term growth capital to expand global credit capacity for channel partners. D&H joined Cisco as an authorized distributor in the United States focusing on helping small and medium-sized businesses succeed. Cisco unveiled two new channel partner programs designed to recognize and reward partners supporting the Cisco security strategy. Cisco announced the additions of the SMB Select growth incentive which provides channel partners with financial rebates and Cisco Learning Credits and announced the global availability of Cisco Learning Credits.
- In the past fiscal year, Cisco also enjoyed many significant global customer wins including: Boeing, UK-based Reuters, Seoul-Based KT, Telmex Chile, Japan Telecom, Singapore Telecommunications Limited, Ukraine's Ukrtelecom, and Vancouver International Airport.
