Cisco's fiscal year 2005 third quarter was characterized by significant technology innovations and customer wins across all customer markets: Enterprise, Service Provider, Commercial (small- and medium- sized businesses), and Consumer/Home Networking. Cisco achieved significant worldwide customer wins in various markets, including IP Communications/VoIP, routing, switching, security, wireless, storage area networking (SAN) and optical; announced vertical deployments in transportation, government, healthcare, financial services, and education; expanded relationships with several service providers, including BT, Comcast, Japan-based NTT Communications, Seoul-based KT, Sprint, Telekom Malaysia; and announced several channel partner offerings. Cisco also announced definitive agreements to acquire two privately-held companies, adding to the consumer VoIP and server fabric switches technology.
Following are significant innovations highlights from the past quarter:
Enterprise Market, Partner and Customer Highlights:
- Merrill Lynch deployed a Cisco Internet Protocol (IP) Communications system to support 14,000 financial advisors in approximately 600 Merrill Lynch offices nationwide.
- Vancouver International Airport Authority consolidated 30 networks into one by deploying a single, converged network utilizing Cisco Internet Protocol (IP) Communications, Cisco routers and switches and Cisco wireless systems throughout the airport.
- Athens International Airport deployed a Cisco Intelligent Airport Solution, providing the airport with an infrastructure for voice, video and data, with the option to deploy cost saving applications to both passengers and staff.
- Gul Ahmed Textile Mills installed Pakistan's first IP telephony network using Cisco solutions, helping to streamline operations, reduce costs and provide employees with a variety of solutions over a unified IP voice and data network that links its various facilities.
- HP deployed Cisco's optical transport and storage area network (SAN) technology solutions. The two companies are also working together to enable HP to offer a highly resilient and robust data management service to new and existing customers based on the new optical and SAN infrastructure.
- London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care, London, deployed a Cisco Medical-Grade Network to transform radiology and imaging services.
- Singapore's National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) installed a Cisco end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP)-based network over 10 floors of the NTUC Centre.
- The City of Monterey in California deployed a new converged, high-capacity infrastructure replacing T1, digital subscriber line (DSL) and dial-up connections throughout city offices, public schools, fire stations and other facilities.
- Seventeen Canadian municipalities across the country deployed Cisco Internet Protocol (IP) Communications.
Commercial Market, Customer and Program Highlights:
- Cisco announced the CiscoSecureTM Wireless Solution for K-12, bringing rich educational content and resources to students and teachers, while providing greater mobility, convenience and optimized security.
- Community College of Allegheny County built an advanced optical network using the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP).
- Cisco announced the SMB Support Assistant service offering, a tailor support service for small and medium businesses. SMB Support Assistant is one of the latest enhancements to the Cisco SMB Class Solutions program.
Service Provider Market and Customer Highlights:
- BT selected Cisco as a preferred supplier to build its 21st Century Network.
- Sprint and Comcast selected Cisco as the strategic provider of their converged Cisco-based IP NGN.
- Australian broadband innovator Internode deployed Cisco® 12000 Series routers to upgrade its high-quality data-link capacity between Australia and the United States.
- Belgium-based Belgacom selected Cisco and Italtel, a company operating in voice, data, and video integration on telecommunications networks, for the development of its IP based multimedia services.
- Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited launched 100Mbps broadband service based on Cisco® Metro Ethernet Internet Protocol (IP) and optical network solution.
- The Australian arm of Global service provider Hutchison deployed Cisco's networking technology to expand the capability of its popular third-generation (3G) mobile phone network, "3," and to help defend the network against interference such as viruses.
- Japan-based NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) is utilizing Cisco® multicast virtual private network (VPN) technology in the backbone network for its "Arcstar IP-VPN" service.
- Seoul-based service provider KT started offering "triple play" service, or data, voice and video, supported by the Cisco® ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP).
- Telekom Malaysia and Cisco are collaborating to create, commercialize and deliver a comprehensive suite of managed services that make use of integrated data, voice and video IP network technologies.
Channel Partner Highlights:
- Cisco announced the Solution Incentive Program (SIP) which supports collaboration between networking partners and application developers to provide greater customer value.
- Cisco Systems® and Cisco Systems Capital®, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cisco Systems, will add $750 million in short-term growth capital to expand global credit capacity for channel partners.
- Cisco announced the Cisco® Clear Advantage Program, rewarding channel partners for achieving incremental growth targets when selling the Cisco MDS 9000 series of multilayer intelligent directors and fabric switches.
- Cisco channel partner Ronco Communications deployed more than 4,000 Cisco IP Phones for the State University of New York at Cortland.
- MCI and Cisco will collaborate to enable Cisco channel partners to address the diverse needs of today's small and medium-sized business customers by selling IP-based next generation services.
Consumer/Home Networking Highlights:
- Linksys announced that it has shipped more than one million Voice over IP (VoIP) ports in six months, making it the most successful product launch in Linksys history.
- Linksys announced its Compact Wireless-G Broadband router (WRT54GC), which provides home and mobile users with the flexibility to provide both seamless wireless access and connectivity for wired Ethernet devices in a compact design.
- Linksys delivered two new switches for small businesses - the 16-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch with WebView (SRW2016) and the 24-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch with WebView (SRW2024)-both providing high performance, flexibility and reliability.
- Linksys announced its 12 Volt Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit (WAPPOE12), a small business solution which simplifies wireless installations by combining power and data into one cable.
Product and Technology Innovation Highlights:
- Cisco introduced the Cisco XR 12000 Series routers, which represents the combination of the Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS) XR software with the capabilities of the Cisco 12000 Series routers.
- Cisco announced product additions and enhancements to its Cisco 7600 Series routing portfolio.
- Cisco unveiled significant updates to its network-based storage virtualization solutions that will help Cisco and a wide variety of independent software vendors (ISVs) jointly address key customer pain points related to storage provisioning, data migration/replication, backup/recovery, disk capacity utilization, and storage management costs.
- Cisco delivered over 10 new products, software enhancements, and services across its security product portfolio, including new intrusion prevention, application firewall, SSL VPN, and endpoint security innovations.
- Cisco announced features that enhance customers' ability to consolidate and share resources across heterogeneous Storage Area Network (SAN) fabrics.
- Cisco announced an agreement to acquire privately-held Sipura Technology, Inc., a leader in consumer voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology. This represents Cisco's first acquisition for its Linksys division.
- Cisco announced a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held Topspin Communications, Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., a leading provider of server fabric switches.
- Cisco announced it has completed the acquisition of privately held Airespace, Inc. of San Jose, Calif. Airespace, a provider of Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) systems, provides a secure, flexible, and cost effective solution for enterprises and commercial customers.
