Cisco's fiscal year 2005 second quarter was characterized by significant technology innovations and customer wins across all customer markets: Enterprise, Service Provider, Commercial (small- and medium- sized businesses), and Consumer/SoHo. Cisco achieved significant worldwide customer wins in various markets, including IP communications, optical, storage area networking (SAN) and wireless; announced vertical deployments in financial services, education and retail; and announced relationships with industry leaders such as EMC, Fujitsu, Fuji Xerox Singapore and HP. Cisco also announced definitive agreements to acquire three privately-held companies, adding to the security, network management and wireless local area networking (WLAN) technology areas.
Following are significant innovations highlights from the past quarter:
Enterprise Market Partner and Customer Highlights:
- HP and Cisco expand their long-term strategic relationship aligning support services for mutual customers worldwide.
- Fuji Xerox Singapore established a collaborative computing network using Cisco IP communications solutions.
- Cisco, IBM and Metro Systems teamed to boost the IP storage networking market in Thailand.
- Cisco and EMC Corporation intend to provide customers with an end-to-end storage consolidation solution for remote-office data.
- Softbank BB implemented the Catalyst 6500 intelligent multilayer modular switches to offer next-generation broadband content and services through Yahoo!BB.
- Liz Claiborne, Inc. installed Cisco's 4 millionth IP phone as part of the company's IP communications system in their New York and New Jersey-based corporate offices.
- Reuters Group plc installed Cisco's 3 millionth Unity unified messaging client, reinforcing the company's goal to provide instantaneous global communications.
- New York-based office-products retailer Staples is providing shoppers and staff with secure wireless network connections, based on Cisco technology, in all 1,200 of its U.S.-based retail stores.
- Minneapolis-based electronic retailer Best Buy deployed wireless networks across its corporate campus and in its more than 640 retail stores nation-wide.
- Brisbane, Australia's G. James Glass & Aluminum deployed a Cisco storage area networking (SAN) solution to reduce costs and improve the management of surging levels of corporate information.
Commercial Market Customer and Program Highlights:
- Cisco announced the winners of its "Growing with Technology Awards." A distinguished group of small and medium-sized business owners were honored for their innovative use of networking technology.
- Victorian Department of Education & Training deployed the largest Cisco Wireless Local-Area Network in the Asia Pacific region.
- The Université du Québec à Montréal launched its new converged network, an Internet Protocol (IP) -based voice, video and data network implemented by Bell Canada and based on Cisco technology.
- Oman's Ministry of Education deployed a world-leading, wireless solution, using Cisco technology, across more than 200 schools in the Sultanate.
- Grande Island Resort installed a Cisco Internet Protocol (IP)-based communications system, enabling resort guests to utilize enhanced voice and data communication services.
Service Provider Segment Partner and Customer Highlights:
- Fujitsu Limited and Cisco announced a strategic alliance focusing on routers and switches that will enable service providers and enterprises to build advanced Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
- Japan Telecom implemented a Cisco optical platform using the Cisco ONS 15454 for a new telephone service.
- China Telecom selected Cisco as the primary equipment provider for the business network portion of the China Telecom IP Next-Generation Network (also known as ChinaNet Next Carrying Network or CN2).
- Swisscom Mobile delivered business customers who require "anytime, anywhere" connectivity for their laptops with technology from Cisco's Mobile Exchange product portfolio.
- Carriers and research organizations worldwide adopted the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System for building the core of the IP Next-Generation network.
- Cisco launched IP Next-Generation Network advancements, including worldwide adoption of the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System for building the core of the IP Next-Generation network.
- Telecom Italia and Cisco will offer integrated, IP (Internet Protocol) technology voice and data services targeted at midsize and large businesses.
- Milan, Italy-based Italtel and Cisco announced a strengthening of their four year technological and commercial strategic alliance which will focus on addressing the migration of traditional voice networks to next generation Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks. The two companies also teamed to help service providers capitalize on growth in business IP voice services.
- Cisco signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. to expand the delivery and adoption of IP-based managed network services in Taiwan.
- Mumbai, India-based VSNL deployed Cisco broadband metro Ethernet solution to power India's largest broadband network.
Channel Partner Highlights:
- Cisco unveiled two new channel partner programs designed to recognize and reward partners supporting the Cisco security strategy.
- Cisco added an Opportunity Incentive Program (OIP) offer for one of its most successful U.S. channel marketing programs, Success Builder. In addition, Cisco expanded the OIP component of the IP Freedom program to include small businesses.
- StorageTek announced that it will resell the Cisco MDS 9000 Multilayer Intelligent SAN Switches, and Cisco joins StorageTek's TekSelect partner program.
- Comstor now provides logistics support for Cisco's "Rapid Response" Distribution Program which addresses end-users' denial of service issues.
Consumer/Home Networking Highlights:
- Broadband phone service leader Vonage and Linksys announced the availability of Wireless-G Broadband Router with phone ports bundled with Vonage service.
- Broadcom Corporation, HP, and Linksys announced that they are collaborating on a new technology, SecureEasySetupTM, which enables consumers to effortlessly setup their wireless networks and activate Wi-Fi Protected AccessTM at the push of a button.
- Linksys and Intel announced the Linksys Wireless-G Media Link for video, music and photos along with support for the DTCP-IP (Digital Transmission Content Protection over IP) framework.
- Linksys' announced a new line of next generation Wireless-G (802.11g) products with MIMO (Multiple In, Multiple Out) technology that can enhance the speed and range of a Wireless-G network.
- Linksys announced its new Wireless A/G Game Adapter (WGA54AG), allowing popular game consoles wireless connection to the Internet for real-time multi-player gaming.
- Linksys added the Wireless Media Center Extender, Wireless-G Internet Video Camera, and several new VoIP products to its product portfolio.
Product and Technology Innovation Highlights:
- Cisco extended its CRS-1 product family with the introduction of the Cisco CRS-1 8-Slot Single-Shelf System.
- Cisco announced new and enhanced solutions for edge, metro and core multiservice optical networks.
- Cisco announced new innovative products for the Cisco Catalyst Switch portfolio with higher levels of security, availability, performance and investment protection.
- Cisco announced enhancements to its Cisco ONS 15530 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) multiservice aggregation platform, a key solution in Cisco's comprehensive Storage Area Networking (SAN) extension portfolio.
- Cisco announced new Aironet access points and integrated wireless intrusion detection system capabilities providing customers with additional capacity and support for the IEEE 802.11i security standard and Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2).
- Cisco announced the Cisco File Engine Series appliances, which are the company's first products to utilize wide area file services (WAFS) technology.
- With an initial $12 million investment over the next five years, Cisco announced its intent to open a research and development center in Tokyo, Japan, opening in February, 2005.
- Fifteen anti-virus partners who have met the criteria for interoperability with Cisco's Network Admission Control (NAC) program are now delivering or scheduled to deliver solutions in the first calendar quarter of 2005.
- Kingsoft Co. Ltd. and Rising Tech. Co. Ltd., two of China's leading anti-virus software and services providers, join Cisco's Network Admission Control (NAC) program.
- Cisco added business-quality videoconferencing capabilities to its Cisco MeetingPlace rich-media conferencing solution.
- Cisco announced definitive agreements to acquire three privately-held companies, including: Jahi Networks, a provider of network management appliances; Protego Networks, a provider of security monitoring and threat management appliances used in enterprise and small-to-medium business networks; and Airespace, a provider of wireless local area networking (WLAN) systems.
- Cisco also completed the acquisition of two companies, including: Austin-based NetSolve, Inc., and Santa Clara-based BCN Systems, Inc.
