Customer Highlights and Technology Innovation Fact Sheet: Fiscal Year 2004 Second Quarter

Cisco's fiscal year 2004 second quarter was characterized by significant customer wins and technology innovations across all customer segments: Enterprise, Service Provider, Commercial (small- and medium-sized businesses), and Home Networking (small office/home office). Cisco achieved noteworthy worldwide customer wins in the advanced technology areas of IP communications, wireless, optical, and storage networking; continued momentum in the service provider segment, announcing deals with Bell Canada, China Telecom, Dishnet, Paris-based FREE, SBC, Telecom Italia, and TELUS; and announced a number of deployments in government and education. Cisco also made important strides in the security arena by leading a collaborative effort with other industry leaders to protect businesses against Internet worms and viruses.
Following are significant innovation highlights from the past quarter:
Enterprise Segment Partner and Customer Highlights:- As part of its strategy to develop Self Defending Networks, Cisco teamed with Network Associates, Symantec, and Trend Micro to launch the Cisco Network Admission Control program that focuses on mitigating the increased threat and impact of worms and viruses to networked businesses.
- Cisco and Network Appliance teamed to deliver integrated storage solutions to enterprise customers to drive adoption of a standards-based storage networking infrastructure.
- Cisco and VERITAS Software Corp. announced the availability of network-based volume management software for networks on the Cisco MDS 9000 Series of multilayer directors and fabric switches.
- London-based Nationwide selected the Cisco MDS 9000 Family of multilayer director and fabric-class storage area networking (SAN) switches and the Cisco ONS 15540 Extended Services Platform to help deliver its next generation SAN infrastructure.
- O2 UK, the British subsidiary of European mobile operator mmO2, is deploying a multiprotocol label switching network backbone based on Cisco 12000 Series routers.
- Hong Kong-based CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets implemented a network infrastructure based on Cisco's optical technology, boosting bandwidth and providing greater reliability for secure transaction integrity and resilience across its trading and core operations.
- Swiss Power Utility Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke is deploying the Cisco ONS 15300 Series multiservice optical platform to create a single voice and data network between power stations, remote offices and its central headquarters.
- Ingersoll-Rand successfully deployed a Cisco IP communications system to serve the communication needs of its 45,000 employees in over 100 facilities worldwide.
- Several educational institutions selected Cisco IP communications to increase administrative productivity and enhance learning experiences, including New Zealand-based Otago University, State University of New York (SUNY) Cortland, Moraine Valley Community College, Texas-based Liberty-Eylau Independent School District, and UK-based Aston University.
- Bellevue Manila Hotel deployed Cisco networking solutions to provide high-speed Internet connections in the hotel's 222 guest rooms.
- The Grand Hyatt Singapore will deploy a high-speed wired and wireless Gibabit Ethernet switched network infrastructure offering corporate clients an "office-away-from-the-office."
- Cisco launched program advancements geared to strengthen Cisco channel expertise and enable channel partners to deliver commercial and enterprise-class IP communications solutions to customers.
- Cisco and Bell Canada teamed to accelerate the creation, commercialization and delivery of IP services, enabling business customers to use integrated data, voice and video IP-based networks.
- SBC Communications affiliates are using the Cisco 7600 Series routers for the new SBC Metro Ethernet OPT-E-MAN service, a carrier-class switched Ethernet service that SBC is offering in major metro markets.
- China Telecom Group is deploying Cisco 12000 Series routers for expansion of the northern and southern backbone networks of ChinaNet, China Telecom's broadband Internet.
- India's premiere ISP, Dishnet, chose the Cisco 12000 Series routers to increase Dishnet's bandwidth capacity to offer videoconferencing at substantially lower prices.
- Paris-based FREE is deploying Cisco's multi-service Gigabit Ethernet-based broadband aggregation architecture, enabling new television services over DSL.
- Telecom Italia enlarged its broadband network infrastructure with next generation Cisco 10000 Series broadband routers.
- TELUS launched Canada's first carrier-grade hosted and managed IP telephony service, designated a Cisco Powered Network, to business customers in Toronto and Quebec.
- Soul Pattinson Telecommunicationsthe first Australian service provider to integrate optical networking and IP services over a microwave communications infrastructure using Cisco's optical networking solution.
- Advancing its leadership in IP communications, Cisco acquired Latitude Communications, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise conferencing products with its MeetingPlace audio and web conferencing solution.
- Cisco announced significant enhancements across the company's core and edge routing portfolio. The new Cisco 12800 Series router doubles the capacity of the world's largest core networks; Additions to Cisco 7600 Series enable new edge services for SBC and Comcast.
- Cisco introduced additional storage networking capabilities for the Cisco MDS 9000 Family of Multilayer Intelligent directors and fabric switches that utilize both Cisco innovations and open industry standards.
- In the wireless space, Cisco announced the Cisco Aironet 1200 and 1100 Series IEEE 802.11g Access Points for high performance, secure, manageable and flexible wireless local-area networks.
- Cisco announced significant product additions and enhancements to its metro Ethernet switching portfolio, aimed at helping service providers deliver scaleable, profitable and differentiated metro Ethernet services to their enterprise business customers.
- Cisco introduced video gateways for cable operators' video-on-demand services as part of the next phase of the Cisco Next Generation Digital Video Network strategy.
- Highlighting its leadership in IPv6, Cisco demonstrated the networking industry's first IPv6 multicast digital video transmission over a trans-Atlantic link, using Cisco 12000 Series routers and Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches.
- EarthLink announced that it will offer Linksys wired and wireless home networking products to its high-speed Internet subscribers.
- Linksys announced several new home entertainment products, including a Wireless-B Media Link allowing users to listen to digital music and access thousands of global Internet radio stations on their living room stereos; a multimedia DVD Player with Wireless-G Media Link, wirelessly distributing digital video, music, and pictures stored on a PC for viewing and playing on a TV and/or stereo system; and the Linksys Wireless Media Adapter, Wireless Internet Video Camera, and Wireless Game Adapters.
- For consumers and small businesses, Linksys announced its 10/100 8-Port VPN Router, and the EtherFast 120GB Network Storage Device with PrintServer, providing file and printer sharing, and backup and remote management.
