Cisco Debuts LAN2LAN for ISDN in Europe: PC-Based Router Software
LONDON, U.K, February 6, 1995 -- Cisco Systems today demonstrated itscommitment to the burgeoning European ISDN (Integrated Services DigitalNetwork) market by adding a new product to its flagship software routerfamily: LAN2LAN for ISDN.
"As Cisco becomes the primary internetworking supplier to the majorpan-European organizations, we are increasingly finding that they arelooking to offer their remote offices bandwidth-on-demand solutions usingISDN," said PhilippeBrawerman, president of Cisco Europe. "We willcontinue to maintain the technology leadership across all markets that ourcustomers require."
Today's announcement is the first in a series of LAN2LAN for ISDNproducts that address a market that will almost double this year, accordingto Dataquest. The products result from a technology relationship with ITKGmbH, Dortmund, Germany, and will interoperate with all Cisco ISDN productsincluding the
Key Features and Benefits
For customers that use ISDN as the primary method of communication,LAN2LAN for ISDN performs dial-on-demand routing, which saves transmissioncosts by invoking the ISDN connection only when necessary. In order to maintain acceptable network response times during periodsof heavy traffic, LAN2LAN's ISDN software supports bandwidth-on-demand,which initiates multiple simultaneous calls to a single destination. A dialbackup feature enables ISDN to serve as a backup technology at sites wherethe primary link is a leased line.
Security features include calling line identification, which verifiesacceptable incoming calls and prevents intrusion by unauthorized personnel.Calling line identification can be used in conjunction with thePoint-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol(CHAP).
LAN2LAN multiprotocol PC-software routers work with off-the-shelf LANadapters and are available in Remote-Office and Enterprise configurations. The products also support bridging over ISDN. Compression features areavailable to reduce response times and increase throughput. Productupgrades allow PPP, X.25 and Frame Relay to run concurrently with ISDN.
Pricing and Availability
LAN2LAN Remote Office for ISDN routes IP and IPX over a maximum of twoISDN channels and costs $2,200 (European list price).LAN2LAN Enterprise for ISDN routes IP and IPX over a maximum of 24 ISDNchannels. Pricing starts at $3,000 (European list price).
The software supports PC platform configurations with multiple ISDNnetwork interface cards, each of which can have one or four ISDN Basic RateInterfaces.
Products are available immediately through European Cisco distributors.ISDN upgrades for existing LAN2LAN customers are available.
