Cisco Adds Ten DC-Powered Routers for Worldwide Telco and Service Provider Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 23, 1995 -- Cisco Systems today introduced tenDC-powered versions of its internetwork platforms for use in telephonecompanies, utilities and service provider environments around the world.

Seven Ethernet-based models of the flagship Cisco 2500 remote access family (including twoAccessServers), the mid-range Cisco 4500, andthehigh-end Cisco 7000 and7010, now can be ordered with a DC (-48 volt) powersupply instead of the standard AC supply. (ADC-powered Cisco 4000-M hasbeen available since the middle of 1994.)

The DC power option will enable Cisco routers to be directly connectedto the high-reliability DC power sources typically used in telephonecompany central offices and service providers' "points of presence."Elimination of the need for DC-AC converters maximizes power efficiency,reduces installation time and cost, and saves costly space in crowdedequipment rooms.

"As service providers cope with a tenfold annual increase in Internetusage and telephone companies increasingly use networks within theircentral offices to manage communications equipment, the router's role inthese environments is expanding dramatically," said Kevin Kennedy, productmarketing director for Cisco's access products. "Cisco has responded bybroadening its product line to include the largest selection of DC-poweredrouters and communication servers on the market."

Pricing and Availability

Cisco's DC-powered routers -- available immediately in the UnitedStates -- will be available worldwide starting in March. DC-powered CiscoAccess Servers will be available in April. DC-power chassis pricing (U.S.list), excluding the required Cisco InternetworkOperating System,ranges from $1,495 for the Cisco 2500 to $6,500 for the Cisco 7000.
